I'm upgrading my CPU, but what is my best option of these three?

Hello,

Currently I have a i5 4460 (LGA1150 Socket) and I am looking to upgrade to something that will allow me to do more content creation and streaming as I am looking to get more into my YouTube and Twitch.

I see three options, which are below;

1) Upgrade to a i7 4790K
2) Upgrade to a i7 6700k
3) Upgrade to Ryzen 5 or 7

Which would be the best for me? It would cost £250 to buy a 4790k, but it's already a few years old and feel it would lag behind. Spending more money on a new socket, either Ryzen or Skylake might be better, for the long run.

What do you guys think?

Solution
I7-4790K is still an excellent processor and would be a big upgrade.
Your I5-4460 has a passmark rating of 6600 and a single thread rating of 1992.
A I7-4790K has a rating of 11197 and a single thread rating of 2530.
A simple drop in upgrade.

If you upgrade to I7-6700k you will also need a z170/270 based motherboard as well as DDR4 ram.
A similar rating of 11109 and a single thread rating of 2349.

If you were to upgrade to ryzen 5 1600, you would have a rating of 13353 largely because of 12 threads vs. 8 for I7.
The single thread rating would be 1856 for less threaded apps like games.
You would also need a new motherboard and ddr4 ram.

My thought... I7-4790K

the more cores/threads available on the Ryzen will make some media creation faster but a lot of other programs may suffer a tad bit.
the i7s will get you better frame rates in most games, but more may be designed to run using more cores in the very near future so that may not be an issue after some time.

it really depends on what the system will be doing the majority of the time.

Please post full system, specs-including display details and your uses for the system.

Skip the 6700K option, it's not worth the money for the small increase in performance, you cash will be better spent on the I7 4790K and using the MB/RAM money-if available-on either increasing system RAM and adding a fast SSD.

A Ryzen upgrade makes a little more sense purely for content creation, it's where these chips really shine, but if you play games at 1080 rez on a fast display it'll be a fairly significant downgrade in that area, at 1440 or 4K the differences are much smaller.

Overall, I'd go with Geofelt and just drop in a i7 4790K, maybe add some extra RAM or a SSD/upgraded SSD and job done.
