Hi there

I bought a refurbed Dell Optiplex 745 on eBay. I intended to install W7 on a SSD to replace the HDD but found I can't use a regular ISO. I want to install Linux on the SSD and keep W7 on the SSD. I know it only has two SATA ports. I plan to unplug the optical drive - but I can't see a power lead from the optical drive? Any ideas how to install this SSD?

Thanks,
Alex

Which 745 case did you get The Mini Tower MT, Desktop DT, Small Form SFF, or Ultra Small USFF. The first 2 should be BTX and have modern drive connectors. My E520 MT from the same era has them ,and my 745 MT has them also. The 2 drive cable problem suggests that you have one of the small forms that only have 2 bays in the case. The optical drive has to have a power lead of some kind. Dell very often puts 90* ends on their cables so the wires may be hidden from view. Be sure to turn off Auto Defrag in System Tools. This on by default in Dells and will ruin your SSD. You could just partition the SSD and run everything from there , if it's the original HDD it probably isn't very big anyway.

MT Can hold 2HDD's and 2 Optical drives and a floppy. The DT Can hold 1 HDD But i think if you took out the 3.5HDD And put the SSD And 2.5HDD On top they would fit? But then powering both and an optical drive would not work. So with the DT Either ditch it and have one HDD Or one SSD Or sacrifice the Optical for the HDD.
