Just a RAM Memory question.

So I was thinking of getting an extra 4Gb of DDR3 RAM for 12 GB in total. However would it be better to do that, or get 8 GB of DDR4? I'm not really sure what would be best. I know 8GB is fine, but...

On a side note, this is due to me wanting to play Batman Arkham Knight, because I heard its very RAM intensive, not sure if thats true though.

Wait. The one I have now is a Crucial Ballistic Sport 8GB kit (4GBx2). Would it be fine to get just a simple 4GB, or sould I get the kit again. I imagine it wouldn't matter since they're separate right?

Hi,

8 Gigabyte is efficient enough to play that batman game. However as previously mentioned, if you are running a DDR3 board then it will not be compatible with the new DDR4 modules. I would instead look at your motherboard and perhaps upgrading the speed at which your DDR3 RAM modules currently run at, for exmaple if your modules are only running at 1333mhz, upgrade to 1866mhz if your board can handle it. There isnt much between the 1333mhz and the 1600mhz modules but the best bet is to upgade to one of the higher speed DDR3 modules such as the 1866mhz if you can. If you dont know the name of your board a program called speccy will tell you for free which you can search and download of the net. Then simply search your board up on the internet and have a look at what RAM speeds it can handle.

In all honesty it isnt a hard game to run so i would recommend just using https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri to tell you if you can run it anyway before worrying yourself with hardware changes that may be unnecessary.

Memory manufacturers guarantee the rated speeds and timings of any memory to be obtainable only in the kit it is sold in. If you are adding an additional set of memory, the rated speed and timings may not work due to the extra stress on the memory controller.

So what would that mean in more simple terms? Would adding 4Gb of the same exact RAM not work because it wasn't in the same kit?

True but it not much of a problem for low speeds like 1600 or below. sounds like the OP has 4GB right now and wants to add 8. That is when you run into problems. Stick to the same amount of memory per dimm and speed.

I have 2 4GB sticks of Crucial Ballistic Sport (From the 8GB kit). All I'm asking is if adding another 4GB stick would be fine.

You can add it and sure it will add an additional 4gb of RAM it just wont be dual channeled with another piece of RAM as the other slot will be empty. I think however, 8Gb of RAM is already plenty.

Would that be a big problem or would it be fine. Eventually I'd get another 4GB I imagine. But for the now, is having a dual and single channel mixed gonna slow things down or not actually give me improved performance because of it...

As long as when you eventually get the other 4gb its the exact same module it wont be an issue. Also it will make a difference as if your dual channeled RAM sticks are overloaded it will move over to the single channel stick and utilise the extra 4gig :) so not useless at all really thanks for the vote. :)
