curious if the new GTX 1070 or 1080 GPU's will run on my 4-5 year old mobo. It's a Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P

I notice that it has a single slot that is rated pci ex16, but if 2 cards are used they run at pci ex8. Not sure what that means.

here's the spec page for the mobo:
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z68XP-UD3P-rev-10#sp

Also I've got a PSU that is 650W. (ANTEC EA650 RT) So maybe that will be a factor as well.

Thank you for any tips!

Solution
Yes this will run on those kinds of boards(I have a 1070 on a Z68 board).

Use the x16 slot and leave the second one empty for the best performance. Depending on the game, the performance hit is pretty small anyway even at X8.

As for power, just make sure you have the required pci-e power connectors(check if you have 6 or 8 pin[6+2]).

Solution
Hmmm. I up voted nukemaster's response, as I agree with it. But for some reason, it also picked it as the solution, so I unselected it. Forum bug, maybe?

Edit: I see now what happened. I up voted at the same time LML picked as a solution. Please forgive me! :)

Specs on the board indicate 1x 8 pin power connector. So, for 2 cards, do they daisy chain power to the 2nd card, if used?

If the card has 1 x 8 pin connector, 2 cards requires 2 of them.

I do not generally recommend 2 1080's on that power supply. You seem to have 540 watts @ 12 volts(Please confirm on your units sticker). While it could work(assuming your cards are more overclocked and everything else is fairly light), I would guess it would be a pretty heavy load when the system was fully loaded.

My 1070 has 1 x 8 pin as well(the reference 1080 has the same). I have my 6 + 2 connected.

EDIT
DookieDraws. I have removed the mis-selected best answer. It is all good now.

thanks again,
I'm now looking at going with a couple older GTX 760's--for now
my current PSU is a 650W Antec--sorry if my badge says otherwise--this this power will do it?

2 760s will most likely perform worse than a single 1070(but the 1070 prices are high right now.) and take over 2x the power.

You are looking at a good 350+ watts in video cards alone. It is possible depending on the rest of the system, but again would be cutting it and thus I do not recommend it.
