sorry i should have stated it was my friends CPU. we were testing to see how high his CPU can hit so i let him borrow my cooler and the first test we just wanted to see the stock voltages that it would hit at load but for some reason it was hitting way higher than it should be so i first thought that i didn't apply enough thermal paste the first time around or it didn't spread, so i reapplied the thermal paste and reinstalled the CPU Cooler. the CPU Cooler is fitted as tight as it can be and for some reason this CPU on intelburntest keeps hitting 80c. not only that but it keeps freezing during the test.

Hi,

If everything was normal before remounting the cooler, slack off the tension screws. They can be over tight causing mobo board flex.

As for paste, too much is worse than too little. Heat has to transfer between the cpu and heatsink (You get that) but if too much paste the heat can't transfer through the paste properly or quick enough concealing heat like an oven.

There's many methods of applying paste, firstly starting off with the pea drop or line which ever. Then usually apply pressure with the heatsink to spread the paste, however i like the glad rap on finger method. I've overclocked a couple systems 920 in my sig (Still going strong) and 2600k @ 4.5. Both very good temps using noctuas, but your dark rock should be just as good.

I use glad rap over finger to create a smooth spread without any prints. I'd rather paste to cover the entire cpu rather than allow control over pressure from heatsink itself, i just don't trust it and since the whole cpu surface will be pretty hot, i want to make use of the entire heatsink surface rather than 3/4's of it i've seen in diagrams.

i was getting the same temps before i reapplied thermal paste. i thought i didnt add enough thermal paste. but i did. i think delidding it is the solution. but my friend doesn't want to risk breaking it which is understandable.

Hows your case air flow? Intelburntest is extreme and will make any cpu run hotter than anything normal put through it even at stock. A good cooler will remain temps in check even if overclocked and voltage in reason.

Delidding may help, maybe 3~5c.

Good air flow is key (Hows yours arranged?) and right amount of paste as i mentioned before.
