WoW is taking ages to load, and TM is showing 100% disk usage with very low mbps. Please help me! For more details, read post:

First of all, thanks for taking the time to help me. This is the benchmark of the drive (and the rest of my pc) while just Windows Explorer and other basic, invisible programmes were running: http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/4140004#DRIVE

One hundred percent of the time I am loading World of Warcraft zones, the HDD reaches 100% usage, while at the same time often displaying ~1mbps used by WoW, and just a few kilobytes by other programmes. What's up with this?

It also frequently displays the 100% usage when using other programmes like Chrome.

I have disabled Windows Defender (not ideal), but this seems to have helped a tiny little bit. Before I'd disabled Defender, it was at 100% usage at all times. I have also tried this fix: https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/fix-100-disk-usage... , but it seemed to have no effect.

Any and all input I will appreciate, even if it is from stuff you notice simply from the benchmark that isn't related to the HDD.

Thanks a lot,

Tom

Thanks Sedivh. I note that in that article it says that if you have more than 10% of your HDD free, it should be okay. Meanwhile, I have 188 gigs of space left, equivalent to over 20%. I'm going to delete some stuff now anyway.

10% minimum. It depends on how much memory you currently have on your system (the less you have, the more VRM it will use), and how memory intensive is the stuff you're playing. Wow isn't that memory intensive from what I can remember, but it'll depend on your graphics settings in wow. If you set it all on low, it might help. Also if you run tons of addons, that will increase memory usage.

Thanks Sedivy. I am deleting lots of films and old games I don't play any more. I'm also going to give it a good old fashioned defragment. I don't set it on low, more like medium/slightly above medium. With a 4790k processor and gtx970 I shouldn't be having to run WoW on low settings!

It's not a matter of just cpu or gpu but also of bottlenecks. Memory can be a bottleneck, so if it's low, even though you have a decent video card and a good processor, you'll still stutter in games. I used to run on 4Gb and over time, as wow's requirements increased a bit (they updated the engine over the years), i had to lower settings, until I had them on all lowest in order to play smoothly.

Currently I'm on 8gb of RAM, but it's so cheap and easy to upgrade, I might just do it. That's if my HDD isn't fucked!

There are now 306 free gigabytes, and I've completed a full defragmentation. PC is still running the same unfortunately. If I buy a new HDD, will I have to buy a fresh version of Windows 10?

If you already bought windows once (ie. it's not an OEM version like on laptops), then you should be able to log into the microsoft account, associate your current copy with the account, and then select migrating the pc. That way if you do a fresh install, you should be able to just log into microsoft account, and have the same copy.
But it's odd that it's still happening even though you cleared it. Usually the drive's manufacturers will have a utility that will allow you to check the integrity (health) of your drive. I recommend running that at least once.
Otherwise, look for other possible causes of such frequent access to the disk. If you hit ctrl+alt+del and go into task manager, and under process tab, sort by disk usage, what processes are hogging all the disk use when this happens?

I'll search for something to test the integrity of the drive with tomorrow. Meanwhile, a screenshot of my 100% usage http://imgur.com/7wIgH65

Seems likely I'll be buying another HDD at this point...
