Hello,

I first built my computer about 2 years ago, intending for it to be a computer I could play games on as it has a GTX 970 and other components that fit well into the budget for the computer. As for storage, I decided to purchase both a SSD and a Hard Drive. They are the 128gb OCZ Trion and a 1TB WD Blue HDD, respectively.

The other day I left for work and when I returned home, my computer was on but it was on the BIOS. I attempted to Save and Continue just to get my computer past BIOS because I thought there was just a small malfunction or something simple. Upon further inspection, I discovered the S.M.A.R.T. report said "S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad, Backup and Replace" and also that in BIOS the computer was reading that the SSD had 0.0mb of storage.

I understand (ever so slightly) what the issue is, but the main problem with what has occurred is that my Operating System (Windows 10) was loaded onto the SSD that failed, along with a few other programs that I had for startup but not nearly as important as the OS. I know that retrieving information from a failed SSD is pretty difficult, and I do not even know if it will be possible to retrieve the OS whatsoever.

The only options I seem to have are those that follow:
- I can purchase another SSD, another copy of my OS, and re-install/setup the computer
or
- I can purchase my OS again and just load start up on my HDD

These are the questions I have:
1) Is it even possible to retrieve the OS from the failed SSD, and would it even be worth trying? The cheaper retrieval programs are still edging $100
2) Is it possible to download an OS to a HDD that already has roughly 200gb of 1TB taken up on the drive?
3) Out of the two options above, what would you recommend? Are there any other options that are available to me?

Thank you again to anyone willing to help, these last few days have been kind of a nightmare with orientation schedules and now a computer that can no longer do anything. If anyone wants the rest of the specs, just ask and I will put them in the comments.

Solution

I have the 128gb OCZ Trion 100. The problem is a defective SSD, and this SSD was my boot drive. I am considering installing the OS (Windows 10) onto my HDD, which has all of my normal files on it, including Steam games and such.

I think I have solved the problem on my own by...

strange, i did't see it in there. if you have windows 10 you don't have to worry about having a key to enter in to reactivate. you can do a fresh install and it will reactivate over the internet

Okay, Im going to try to do that onto my hardrive using the activation disk. Do you think that will wipe my HDD?

How do I do this fresh install you are talking about? I just don't want to lose everything on my hdd

with a clean install would wipe everything on your drive. i was just clarifying with you that you wouldn't have to worry about losing your copy of windows if you have to get a new drive.

Okay thank you for that information. I have the CD key and activation code from two years ago but I cannot do anything right now. If I can still get Windows 10 to download again without having to buy it, where do I go to do that and what will I need to do?

Something is amiss here. Haven't you indicated that the problem you've experienced involved a failed or defective SSD - your boot drive? If that is the case, why are you considering installing an OS onto that drive? Or have I misunderstood the problem?

Have you tested the SSD with the OCZ (Toshiba) diagnostic program)? See...https://ocz.com/us/download/ssd-utility

(If it is the SSD that's the problem is your model the Trion 100 or the Trion 150?)

Good that it all worked out. I must have misunderstood. It sounded to me that you were planning to install the OS onto the SSD, but of course that was not the case.

BTW, the reason I inquired as to what model Trion was involved was because our (and others) experience with the 100 was quite negative. Very slow performance even from a more-or-less entry model SSD and I'm aware of at least three users whose Trion 100 failed. Although I haven't had any experience with OCZ's Trion 150 model I've been led to believe it's far superior.
