Hey, I am getting an i3 7100 and was wondering what is a good and pretty cheap Motherboard to go with it and does it support DDR3. Looking to play CS:GO,Overwatch, and Minecraft

Depends on how you want to expand. And also if you have a Skylake processor to update the BIOS on Skylake chipsets.

If you want no fuss and just a 'plug n play' effectively then a good B250M motherboard. If you're not planning on SLI/Crossfire or overloading your motherboard with peripherals and RAM. I've used the B250M-PRO, B250M-K, or the B250M-D3H which are both less than £80 and are great motherboards for the price, but obviously limit expandability as they are Micro. That's for budget anyway.

More expensive will get you to expand out of M-ATX and into some Z270 models.

I just want a plug n play. can handle a gtx 970 and ddr3 8gb ram basically thats all. and for the B250M motherboard which one? asus or msi

Alright let me give you the long story.

The newest tech lga 1151 , am4 (and soon x299(out of your budget) require ddr4 ram.
THere are a few motherboards that support DDR3L, which is something different than ddr3.

you could go for old gen like lga 1150 , but thats only worth second hand with the price.
the g4560 is way cheaper than the 6300 and i3 4160 and beats both of them.

Apologies, I overread the DDR3 part. It's not recommended to mix DDR3 with Kaby-Lake processors. Equally the majority of Kaby Lake Motherboard don't support DDR3. You can only use lower voltage DDR3 Ram (DDR3L) with Kaby Lake without the potential for damaging the CPU. Personally, I agree with Superninja12, I'd sooner opt for the g4560 and boost up to DDR4 on a B250M Motherboard.

So in regards to keeping your DDR3, if you're going for Kaby-Lake - you'll likely have no choice but to get rid of them.

Yeah I agree, but what if i want to keep my ddr3 ram? and want to buy the g4560? what motherboard goes with it. if it isnt good to use ddr3 with an i3 than ill make the switch.

THERE IS NO MOTHERBOARD THAT SUPPORTS YOUR RAM with a g4560.

Apologies I think I've maybe not explained well enough. To Intel recommendation you CANNOT use DDR3 on ANY Skylake or Kaby-Lake based rig. DDR3 is not supported. So i3, i5, i7 , G4560 you name it, it will only support DDR3L (which is completely different) as DDR3 will damage the IMC.

You either have to go older generation CPU and Motherboard, and stick with DDR3, or upgrade to newer generation CPU and get DDR4 (Please don't opt for DDR3L). The DDR4 market is saturated and prices are decreasing every day, so it's not expensive.

is there a way to sell ddr3 pretty quick?

I'll be honest, I don't understand the rush. There's no method of getting DDR3 to sell more quickly. Just sell it, if someone wants it, they will buy it. Only thing that gets it sold quickly is selling it to a friend or lowering your asking price. Or better yet find a game trading shop like CEX, they'll give you less but take it right away.

But I must be honest, I don't understand the huge rush. Forgive my ignorance.

Try and take them to an exchange shop if you're desperate. But you won't regret bumping to DDR4 for the price it is now! I hope you have a good vacation, and it is still worth considering superninja12's advice. You can save yourself a bit more money by getting the g4560 instead, much cheaper but phenomenal value/performance for money.

Yeah, ive decided to switch for to the G4560. I might bring it with me and exchange and pay more money for DDR4. Thank you guys for the help.

Basically my set up from this would be
G4560
GTX 970
DDR4 8GB
B250M Motherboard

Looks a mighty fine set up to me. Yeah the 7100 is a faster CPU, but the performance increase to the G4560 is minimal and in my opinion not worth it when the G4560 is so much cheaper.

Glad we could be of help. Enjoy your vacation!

Remember to mark as solved and closed when you're happy dude! Thank you.
