Hey guys,

I've been thinking about saving up for an i7-7700k but I feel like if I spend so much money on a computer component I will start to feel like im addicted to gaming. I feel like its a waste. I'm thinking about getting a job about computers later. I always feel guilt when im playing video games or when im on the computer like right now. I feel like I could be doing something more productive even though its summer and my grades are amazing and im highly educated. Im choosing between being a doctor and going into ICT. I just want to ask you guys if im just over reacting and I should just buy the i7-7700k or if I should just focus less on computers and try to be a doctor later. I know this is a weird threat and confusing but if you guys could leave some opinions that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The 7700k is plenty fast without overclocking. It is capable of a little more than the 4.5Ghz max it has, but without good cooling it is only a few hundred megahertz.

You can change the frequency in the BIOS, but it is a little more complicated then that, typically. You have to adjust voltages, and settings to achieve stability.
What CPU do you currently have? Do you need the upgrade? How old are you? Are you in senior year of college?

I don't know. I can't dictate your life for you, but if you want to play games and you have some time now, it's not bad to enjoy it while you can. Once you've secured a full-time job, living by yourself (or with a significant other / spouse), bills, etc., you have a lot less time for gaming. Also, you may have different priorities and interest later in life other than gaming. Again, I'm not saying that you should quit and just focus on studying / career paths; however, if your priorities are not set properly and are only focused on gaming and not on your health, grades, etc. then that's a different story. If you can balance game time and enjoy it while you can, then I see no issues.

I think you can do whatever you want in your spare time and you don't have to feel bad about it. And the question of whether or not you should buy a 7700K depends on what you have already. If you have any Core i7 from the past 3 years then no you don't have to upgrade. If you have a Core i5 from the past 3 years I'd say you could get by on it. Anything older and/or anything weaker you probably should upgrade it.

I put a lot of money into my computer hardware and use it sparingly. So I want it to be the best possible experience during the time I can dedicate to it.

As to your personal feelings, all forms of entertainment are intended to be a distraction from day to day tasks. If you spend 100% of your time studying or working you will burn out quickly. Particularly in the medical field, since new doctors often work odd shifts and become isolated from everyone except other medical professionals.

To not feel bad about gaming I suggest scheduling it around more regular tasks. Read a chapter, put some time on your schedule for games. Or something like that.

I currently own an old a8-7600 that bottlenecks my gtx 1060 3gb. I want to start making professional looking youtube videos and start streaming because it looks really fun to me to have people that watch you and like your content. Im currently 15. I live in the netherlands so I dont really know how to explain what year im in but im in the third year of high school. Mostly when I come home from school I go behind my computer and then finish all my homework and studying at like 8pm. I still have good grades and im in a highly educating school but I feel like if the computer was not in my life I would be doing way better in school. I also enjoy freerunning but I don't do it that often anymore because of my computer and I think that if I buy this cpu I would spend even more time on the computer. But at the same time I will get the community on youtube and twitch that I want.

Thanks. I will try to do that. And would you recommend overclocking the processor? I'm not experienced at all and from what I can tell I think you just have to go into the bios if you have the right motherboard and change the mhz but I don't know if im correct. It takes me a while to save up for stuff like this and overclocking breaks the warranty. What is your thought on this?

You don't necessarily have to get a 7700k. You could do fine with a Core i5 7600K or a Ryzen 5 1600. Either of those would pair fine with your graphics card.

Upgrading from an AMD A8 to an Intel i7-7700K would mean that you have to upgrade the motherboard and RAM as well. A cheaper alternative would be the AMD Ryzen route. You still have to replace the motherboard and RAM, but the CPU is cheaper.

Everyone will be more productive if they are not distracted. You just have to balance your life. All work and no play can generate good results for show but if you're not happy, then it's not right for you. On the other hand, all play and no work is going the other extreme. You just have to balance it. You don't have to play games every day. Just slot it in when you can. You can also opt for an alternative to video gaming like play sports, travel to new places, etc. Tons of stuff you can do.

Do you think those cpu's could stream and or record games too? I'm thinking of getting into that maybe. In my eyes it just seems awesome to have a community like that and support from people.

I am fully aware of needing a new motherboard and ram maybe even power supply and case for a bigger cooler. I will probably go for the ryzen route since every few dollars counts to me. Thanks so much for helping me. I will try to limit my computer time to 2-3 hours on schooldays. Do you have any recommendations for during summer or weekends?

Both the i5 and Ryzen can do that. The Ryzen is more bang-for-the-buck.

For weekends/summer, hang out with friends would be my advice. School times are the best for this. Once you get out of school, it's not as easy to meet new people unless you join clubs or something.
