So i had a laptop that i didn't use and i wanted to backup some files on it. I took out its HDD and plugged it in to my desktop through my hot swap box. I copied a lot of stuff (around 200 GB) and hours later it was finished. When it was done i inserted the HDD back into the laptop just to get faced by an error. The error said that the files weren't there or they were deleted. The laptop restarted right after the error showed up so i don't have the full text. After it restarted no files were there all of them were deleted somehow. I'm sure that the files weren't corrupted. If anyone could explain what happened and why it happened i'd appreciate it.

Both PCs are running Windows 10 Pro

Sorry - but what you say is REALLY Fuzzy..
Did you accidentally "move" instead of copy?.. did you not have "hidden files" visible/selected?.. you just drag'n'drop or do a proper clone?
I cant tell what you did.. its a VERY poor description. from the words you said..I take it you:
- Had a HDD in old laptop - (you don't say if you confirmed working before you did anything).
- you then copied the files off of that HDD to another computer/HDD.
- you then put the HDD you just copied the files from back into the original laptop?
- but the laptop did not start - complaining of missing files?.
I probably got that completely wrong - but read your words.. It will give you some idea how bad your description is.
For me.. it sounds like you don't really have any idea what you doing - so probably got the expected result.
If you can explain in more detail what you did - we may be able to give you a more accurate explanation of what went wrong
Cheers

Sorry for explaining poorly, I'll try to answer your questions. I properly copied them (not drag'n'drop). I had show hidden files and even show protected OS files but still didn't show up. The HDD was working before without any problem. It still works.I'm explaining it again in an easier way to understand. So i have my desktop computer which i mainly use and this other laptop which i wanted to use it's HDD as a backup drive. I plugged the laptop's HDD to my desktop so i could copy files from my desktop to the laptop's HDD. Copying was successful then i removed the laptop's HDD from my desktop and put it back into the laptop. The laptop started successfully but when i tried to open the copied files i got an error. The error said something like "These files are deleted or don't exist on this computer, instead they might be on a network. Try connecting to the network and try opening the file again." I couldn't get the full error text because the PC restarted right away after getting the error. After it restarted i went to check the files but all of the copied files were deleted. This problem never occurred before with any other HDD. I'd appreciate it if you could explain what exactly happened and why.

What version of windows is on the drive? I seem to recall hearing of this issue where the OS detects the new "unauthorized" content and deletes it from the drive. Perhaps it has something to do with the early versions of shadow copies and versioning. Assuming that you copied the data to a folder off root, you might want try copying the content to the desktop folder of your main user profile. The other more simple option is to connect the source drive to your laptop and copy the files to it via a USB dock.

Both drives are running windows 10 Pro and i'll try to copy files into the desktop. I can't connect my main drive to my laptop as i don't have an eSATA cable and there isn't a seller nearby.

I could do that but downloading something about 200 GB would take a really long time so i just deleted that solution from my mind.

I'm going to try copying the files into the desktop as you said. I'll make sure to tell you if it works.

Well my download speed is 3MB/second and the upload speed is something like 100KB/second so uploading would take a long time even if you think downloading wouldn't be much of a problem.

and btw i tried copying files to the desktop of laptops HDD. Same thing happened when i started the laptop

oh I didn't understand what you were trying to say at the beginning. I got it now. I can try it but i still want to know why this error occurs.

Edit: Going to sleep will discuss tomorrow

Sorry for the late answer, i was out of the city so i didn't have time to post anything.
I have a 2m Cat-6a cable on spare which im sure works.
I tried connecting my desktop and the laptop with it but the PCs showed up under the media devices screen and not the Computer screen. So i couldn't copy any files.

I took this screenshot from the laptop if it helps
