Newish Build - 1 beep after a while then slowdown

Hi,

So I built this PC several years ago but this problem has been an issue since day 1. There are two issues and one of them i'm not so sure is an issue.

The first thing that you should know is that since day one, the hard drive makes a chirp every time it stops spinning. After googling it a few years back it was attributed as just something these cheaper end WD hard drives do. And noticeable delay when exploring files and folders to get it spinning again.

Second is, sometimes, after a seemingly random amount of usage, the case will beep one time and the hard drive will chirp once indicating it stopped spinning.

When the case beeps, the computer will run very slow, windows (not the OS) may stop responding for 30 seconds or so, and any folder exploration gets slowed to a crawl. (exploring C: drive would take a minute or so to load up the folders and each subfolder as I explore. The computer will fix itself and speed up to normal speed after waiting about 5 minutes.

What do you guys think is likely the problem? A hard drive issue, power supply, ram, cpu, motherboard? . I doubt it's software since this is a fresh windows 7 install (fully updated with drivers installed), and i had these same exact problems with windows 8 which was running previously. I also ran a RAM check and there were no errors there. I'm thinking it might be the hard drive or power supply. Temps also average about 40-50 C for the CPU and lower than that for everything else with basic use and installing programs.

Solution
Okay so turns out, after updating the HDD firmware, the issue was all but solved. Thanks for your help though.

For anyone wondering my HDD is the ST2000DM001, i went on the seagate website, and downloaded and installed the newest firmware. The hard drive still chirps every now and then but it runs well. I would not recommend this hard drive, however.

Sounds like a terrible HDD, if you have a spare one on hand, throw that in with a fresh install of Windows 7 and try some of your daily tasks on there. If it's smoother, you HDD is probably very bad.

It might also be worth grabbing something like Speccy and taking a look at the SMART information, that may reveal some extra details about the drive.

You could hop on eBay and just grab a really cheap on for testing purposes, just so you know if it's the drive or something else.

Yeah I have a buddy with a good computer, I'm gonna take the HDD and try it on his rig. Although, after updating the BIOS and the firmware on the hard drive, the chirping seemed to have stopped. But the computer still stutters and operates fairly slowly when installing software. I'm starting to think its the CPU since the usage jumps to about 60-80% in short bursts anytime I try to do anything including stream youtube videos. The audio and video stutters every time the video buffers. But for now I'm gonna try to rule out (or not) the HDD.

Thanks for your help though, you're great.
