I own a laptop with a GTX 960m mobile gpu, and a I7 6700HQ. It performs decently in 1080p gaming. (Medium settings most of the time).
However, a friend of mine recently upgraded from his GTX 680 to a 1080 ti! (He has way more money than me..)
And today he gave me his old 680 for free! And i've been looking into building a new pc for a while. But I don't quite want to build a pc yet, because I'm waiting for Nvidia's Volta cards, or GTX 11xx gpus. (Maybe an 1170?)
However, I thought maybe I could build a new pc now, and use the GTX 680 while I wait for the next series of Nvidia gpus.
Planning to build something like this:
GTX 680 (1170 in the future)
i7 7700K or i5 7600K (is i7 overkill?)
M2 Nvme SSD as boot drive
7.2k Rpm Hdd for games
550w psu
But my final question is, will this pc perform better in games than my current laptop (with the 680), or should I just wait for the new gpus, and build it then?
