Hi guys,

I'm at my wit's end and I hope someone here can help me. This is my rig:

  • GPU: ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 AMP+
    CPU: Intel Core i5-7600K
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI Motherboard Intel
    RAM: Patriot Memory 4GB PC4-19200 - DDR4
    PSU: EVGA 220-GS-0650-V2
    HSF: Noctua NH-U12S

When I initially assembled the computer, it was stuck in a boot loop. It would beep five times and then power off. Then it would restart and do it all over again.

I worked through the default and extended troubleshooting guide here on tomshardware multiple times. I breadboarded the computer and started with only Motherboard, CPU and HSF. Got five beeps as expected, since there was no RAM. As soon as I added a stick of RAM the computer would start but remain completely silent. I tried out another power supply to rule that one out. Same behaviour. I tried out both sticks of RAM (I got 2 4GB sticks) in every possible order and every possible slot. Same result; dead silence. Interestingly enough, as soon as I put both sticks of RAM in at the same time I get five beeps again.

Then I send back the motherboard and got the exact same one again. Exactly the same problem. Ok, so at this point it's gotta be the RAM, right? So I ordered this RAM. It just arrived and I tried it out. Now I get 4 beeps again no matter where I put the RAM.

So right now I'm completely lost as to what component is actually broken. This whole thing has been taking around 3 weeks now and is seriously frustrating me.

I hope someone here can help me figure out what is going wrong.

Thanks in advance.

You board does not support a kaby lake cpu without a bios update. You need a z270 board, or a skylake CPU to update the BIOS, or take your board to a shop to update it for yoy
