computer recognizes half of my 32 Gig

Hello all,

I am having a asus P9X79Pro motherboard with 2X16GB Corsair DDR3 1600 MHz (CMZ16GX3M2A 1600C10) sticks on it. Running windows 7 pro (64 bits), it only recognizes 16 Gig. In the bios I have set the Dram-information to XMP profile 1, but when I do save and reset, the system still does not recognize all 32 Gigs. When I then go back into the bios; the XMP shows as disabled.

I also took both of the memory sticks out and re-attached them and checked if the memory units are in the same slot, and they are.

What is happening here, does it mean the bios does not get saved or is there some automatic safety function working.

Any advice on how to have the full memory available?

Many thanks :)

Kind regards, Robert Glotzbach

Solution

Yes. That model is sold as a pair of 2 sticks of memory, each is 8GB, for a total of 16GB of memory.
1. the motherboard manual is located at https://www.manualslib.com/manual/415071/Asus-P9x79-Pro.html#manual
2. re you arranging the ram according to the required pattern ? (see page 25 of manual or picture below)
3. you do realize this system uses quad channel, and your using dual channel ram sticks

Yes thanks, I am using the B1 and D1 slots.
No I did not realize that these are dual channel sticks and the system uses quad channel :ouch:

Does it mean I have the wrong sticks, they where recommended to me.

Thanks...

A single pair is only 16GB. 2 pairs would give you 32GB. If you matched the exact same make/model of memory, it would act like quad channel memory.

There is no physical difference between quad and dual channel memory, just the number of matching modules (sticks). The chipset used is what determines the difference.

Oh I see, I understand now although it would have been nice if they could provide a more clear definition on those stick.
Need to order another similar set then (gues need to stick to DDR 3?).

It still does not explain why my bios settings jump back.

Many thank, much appreciated, Robert
