I know what I'm getting into with portforwarding and shiz like that since I tried it on Windows 10 and got the server up, but I want a dedicated computer to handle the server completely.

My computer is beefy enough to run a couple high-impact-performance games, so the server and the game itself running at the same time wasn't an issue, but with the dedicated computer handling the server, I want to go as cheap as I can, but I want to skimp out less on the stuff that matters most.

Could you guys possibly send a pcpartpicker link or something for the build itself, and then what makes or breaks a gaming server computer? Also could you state some things for if I would want to change the server from Minecraft to Rust, Call of Duty, or an older Battlefield game?

I don't need to purchase an OS since I'll be using linux. I'm going to repurpose a 128 GB SSD for the build, so you don't need to add a storage solution, but I'll need the cheapest 720p+ monitor, the cheapest set of mice and keyboard that would work on Linux Ubuntu, and dust filters to put on the case, but I'll probs scourge the web for those things.

I mean how much power do you actually need for a minecraft server? If it's anything reasonable that you could do with 4 weaker cores, buy some old office computer at a local computer shop like a dell Optiplex 755 or 780 and maybe change out the CPU if you need to and add some extra RAM. I put one together with a Q6600 and 2gb of extra RAM that I got on ebay for a combined $20 and now I have a 4 core 4GB ram computer with a 120GB hdd for $50, perfect for a small server.

To my knowledge, a Pentium G4560 with 8GB of RAM would be fine for most servers - extra cores will go unused, last I checked, so you might even be able to cheap out with a cheaper Pentium or Celeron and an H110 board. Integrated graphics is fine, but it might be wise to put it on an SSD rather than spinning disk. 32-40gb should be plenty for Windows and Minecraft. For a machine like this, a 100w power supply would be plenty.

Edit: it might be fun to look into some small form factor barebones, as it would be very easy to build this to less than the size of a paperback novel.

Those intel NUCs would be a good option for this type of build, but they're kind of expensive. I'm partial to stuff like this because you just get so much for the money.

They almost always have overstock at local computer shops from companies that bought new computers and sold them off super cheap and an extra 2GB of RAM with a $10-15 processor upgrade would make it almost as fast as the NUC for a lot less.
