My current 3 year old PC is getting annoying and lagging on more of the recent games so I was looking to upgrade it.

Current build:
CPU- AMD FX 6300
GPU- GTX 760
MOBO- M5A99X EVO R2.0
RAM- DDR3 2x 4GB (8GB)
STORAGE- 1TB Seagate
OS- Windows 10 64 bit
PSU- 550W Bronze Certified ATX
CASE- Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower

My upgrade budget is around $600. I can reuse some parts if required. I might also sell some old parts.

I wouldn't put a 125w cpu on your motherboard. As to what you should get depends on budget, your gpu is really weak too but you can turn game settings down to low.

Looking at cpu only. Intel current have the best budget offering (G4560) and the best high end (7700k). However the mid range I would take Ryzen over any i5, the 4 threads of the i5 just don't look like a good investment in my opinion.

Any cpu upgrade needs a new motherboard and RAM.

Since when? I've found intel is only better for gaming AND streaming. Save money with AMD.

Yea well I don't think upgrading from an FX 6300 to a 8350 is really worth the pricetag.
