Hello guys,

I recently had problems with my pc not getting a steady and good framerate in all of my games. This appeared to be a problem with my cpu having a too high TDP for my motherboard. Now i tried to find a good alternative, but i really dont know what i should look at. Can you guys help me to find a good combination of Motherboard and CPU for gaming?

Current CPU: AMD-FX-8320
Current Motherboard: M5A78L-M LX3

Thanks!

8320 and 8350 are both 125W CPUs. There might be some lower power editions of the 8320 I think. If your 8320 is too much for your board, the 8350 isn't going to work better. You will need to step down to the 6xxx CPUs, and be careful because some of those are 125W as well. To be honest I wouldn't bother buying a new CPU, I would try underclocking and undervolting your CPU until it's stable.

^ This is good advice - lowering clockspeed and voltage will get it stable at zero cost, but you'll likely have to play with it for a few hours to find the optimal settings.

However, given that these parts are about 5 years old, it might not be a bad time to upgrade. AMD's new Ryzen chips are out and provide a tremendous value, and even a new $65 Intel chip will outperform the FX in most games.

That's what I was trying to say. I wouldn't buy another CPU on a dead platform. You could buy a 95W CPU that will work on your board, but that's money spent on a dead setup. I don't know if your budget allows for buying a whole new system either.
