Hello,

I'm thinking of building a pc, and I'm wondering if a cpu that only supports max. 2400Mhz can run with ram that's set to 3000Mhz.

The cpu is the i7 7700k, and the ram is corsair vengeance lpx black 3000Mhz. My motherboard supports up to 3800Mhz.

Will it work? Do I have to change a setting for it to work? Or will it crash completely? If it does work will it have less performance?

Thank you

It works, However you will have to go into your bios and turn on XMP first. After its on you will need to select the ram frequency in bios. From personal experience, XMP actually does a really good job at setting ram timings that are rated for the frequency of your memory so you shouldn't try to change timings unless you know what you're doing and have the time to spend.

If you don't set the frequency in bios using XMP (or manually setting frequency, voltage, and timings) the ram will run at the highest default speed allowed by Intel without turning on XMP or imputing manually which I believe for the 7700k is 2400MHz

Keep in mind that turning on XMP will change the BCLK and CPU Strap to 125 by default which means that if you...

Also if you're wondering, the ram will actually run at 3000Mhz if you set it that high in bios and won't run at 2400.
hope this helps.
