7700k Overclocking HELP

I need help overclocking my i7 7700k kaby lake to 5 ghz or atleast 4.9. I don't fully understand what to put each setting to in order for the overclock to run stable. I have got 5 ghz to boot at 3.9 voltz but in the middle of stress testing my computer freezes or i get a huge graphical glitch and my computer shuts down.

Specs: cpu: i7 7700k
gpu: turbo gtx 1070
mobo: CyberpowerPC Z270 SLI Xtreme ATX
cpu cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H60 120mm Liquid Cooling System
mem: 16GB (8GBx2) DDR4/2400MHz Dual Channel Memory
psu: 700w

Well not ever 7700K is the same nor are the motherboard etc so there will be a lot of variables.

What are the temps at 5.0 GHz?

Back it down to 4.9 GHz and see if it's stable 1st, what the temps are etc.

With that lower end AIO don't expect much so that's why I was asking about the temps.

My temps at 5 ghz were around 85 C when i used the Heaven Benchmark. It still freezes during the benchmark when i use the 4.9 ghz preset option that is given by the Mobo.

I'm mildly baffled why you need to overclock a 7700k in the first place, but if you're going to do such a hard clock, you will need Water Cooling for a 1151 Socket.

I use a 4790k, and I can run basically everything on my computer at once, with no issues, using an Arctic Liquid Freezer 240

Don't know a lot about AIO's, but I would think one of the mid range ones with a large radiator would do.

Depends on your case what size radiator you can fit. You'll want at least a 240mm radiator if you're going with an AiO. There are some really good air coolers also, but again need to know if your case can fit them.

Also, you said 3.9Volts?? :ouch:

I hope you meant 1.39V

If you want higher fps you should upgrade your GPU. Unless there is a problem. What games and what fps are you getting?

i did mean 1.39V, appologies! Games such as CSGO and PUBG (not optimized yet so I can understand the fps problem) on 1080p all lowest settings, but i seems to get random FPS drops on all games that I play.

Hmm, that's weird. I'm having good luck with PUBG (apart from my mining GPU giving me issues, and my incompatible ram) and CSGO which are both CPU intensive games and I'm streaming adding extra stress on the CPU.

I had constant crashes with PUBG (literally every game) until I noticed my RAM wasn't compatible in my list, and I was trying to use a XMP profile at 2400mhz, and the game couldn't figure it out and would over push my RAM into a reboot. I'd double check that as well, the game is known for sucking the life out of your RAM.

You shouldn't be having issues with your i7-7700k, It's fairly similar to my 4790k, if not better and I'm running stock speeds @4.00ghz

What temps are you hitting with your CPU while overclocking? I sit steady at about 55-60C with my 240 Arctic. Make sure you're doing a nice thin layer of thermal paste on your entire CPU and you're not globbing, and make sure it isn't overheating.

I have a buddy playing PUBG with me out of a PC I built for him out of old AMD parts and a GTX 950, he still hits 50fps on medium settings, and is using a Athlon X4 860k FM2+ CPU @3.7ghz, with stock fan cooling, and 8gb of RAM. I had also had him using an A10-7700k prior to that which is roughly the same as the X4 860k.

Double check your RAM compatibility with your MOBO book, and make sure you have the right ones, I can only run at 1333mhz now and can't return them because I'm an idiot. Don't be like me. Your parts up to par for sure.

You should be topping me by a long shot with that 1070 Turbo, so it can't be your GPU either...

Stupid question, but are all your drivers up to date as well?
And how many monitors are you running?

I now changed both my gpu and cpu to stock and im still laggy as hell in all games. All drivers are updated. it's always something i guess... :/

Are you running a XMP Profile for your RAM?

Go to BIOS and reset everything back to default, and give it a try again and let me know what happens.

Judging by your parts this isn't your first PC, so I'm assuming your RAM is in the correct slots as well. Even with 8gb and one channel, you shouldn't be lagging that bad. Turn off Anti Alaising in options for PUBG too. And foliage down to low (it'll help you anyway since everyone uses low and if your on high, you see the grass you're hiding in, they don't)

Make sure your H60 is connected to your CPU1 Header as well. I feel your CPU might be throttling or overheating as 7700's tend to run a little hot. Keep an eye on it while you play using OpenHardwareMonitor, or whatever program you feel comfortable with to keep an eye on temps, you shouldn't get over 60-70C.

You may want to invest in a 240m AIO Cooler, if you're not trying to build your own to keep it cool. I've read other threads where people have had issues with the H60 keeping their 7700's at a decent temperature.

XMP profile is set to auto, there is no option that actually lets me turn it off. I reset all my BIOS settings and i still get fps drops randomly while playing almost any game. All settings are turned to very low in PUBG also.

i checked cpu-id and saw that my memory was set to single-channel memory mode so i removed both 8gb ram pieces and put them back in and now it says dual-channel memory. Could that be a reason for low FPS??

Absolutely could be the reason. You were running at half ram capacity. What are your timings on your ram? You should be able to hop into the bios, and change your ram freq. manually to whichever you prefer (I use 2133 instead of 2400 as I get a lot of crashes with 2400mhz and gltichy games). and then keep the timings on auto and it should adjust accordingly. Go to the SPD tab in CPUID and then change to the correct ram slot up at the top left of it. Should give you a detailed list of your timings, and what Mhz each stick is running at on each slot, as well as what they're capable of running at, and a nice list of timings to use for different freq.

It's going to be in the advanced settings, somewhere in tuning, find DRAM Freq, switch manual, to whatever your sticks are rated at.

Could you tell me what sticks you're using by chance? There should be a little sticker on each one, that'll give you X-X-X-X and a voltage setting. As well as a big serial number that should be labeld as (XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX). I can probably help you decipher if they're compatible as well and what timings you're lookin' at. (Keep in mind the xxxxxxx isn't the exact amount of numbers, I can't remember how many it is off the top of my head lol)

I've never used your board so I'm not sure where everything is located unfortunately in the BIOS

After looking into your mobo, you do have a water pump 4-pin that you're pump should be connected to, to make sure it runs at FULL speed the entire time, and then the fan that you have mounted to the radiatior should be plugged into your CPU_Fan slot, so it can adjust itself accordingly to cool your radiator in correlation with the temp of your CPU.

I guess technically your H60 is only a 3-pin connection anyway, so it should negate any PWM settings and always run at full, as long as it's a +12v connection. I had stated earlier to put it into the CPU header, switch it to the water pump header if you haven't already.

i watched videos on the installation of my h60 cooler and everyone has two different "pin" connectors, 1 for the fan and another for the tank... but i only have 1 that goes into the "cpu_fan1" slot.....

I don't feel like this cooler is working because neither my gpu or cpu are overclocked and my cpu is always at or above 80C in every game i play and i feel like that can't be good
