Hello

I've come across this add for used PC:

Case: Fractal Design R5
PSU: Super Flower 550w Gold
MB: MSI M-Power Z97
CPU: INTEL i7 4790k 4.0/4.4Ghz
CPU cooler: Prolimatech Armageddon + 140 mm fan
RAM: 16 Gb DDR3 2400 Mhz
SSD: Crucial mx100 256Gb
(PC build comes without GPU)

Do you think it's worth buying for 490 euros?

Thanks for your opinions.

The value proposition is about the desirability of all of the parts. Not just the CPU.

  • ■ do you really like that case? or even care what the case is?
    ■ do you think 550W is enough PSU? It's nice that the PSU is rated gold.
    ■ is a Windows licence included?
    ■ has the processor been overclocked?
    ■ does the feature set of that motherboard meet your needs?
    ■ what are you going to do with the machine?
I converted 490 euros to $721 CDN and reduced that number to $638 to account for the HST I would pay on new components. I don't think it's a bad deal, especially if you get an operating system with it. By the same token, I don't think it's a stellar deal, so I wouldn't feel bad letting it go either.

I agree, I'm having second thoughts too. i7 4790k 4.0/4.4Ghz is still faster than i5 7600K though.

That's about $560USD. Considering the chipset is three years old and without a GPU, that's not that good of a deal. You would of course likely have to buy your own licensed copy of Windows as well, so add that in. (I'd never sell a PC with my licensed copy of Windows still installed anyway....not very smart).

Also FYI the 4.4GHz speed is the turbo boost on one core, not all for cores at 4.0GHz. The i5 7600K at 3.8GHz will not make much of a difference in games. In fact the two CPUs are just about even in some games, and at 1440p there is no difference at all in most games:

You're right, it's probably not worth it, especially because I'd pair it with middle class GPU like GTX 1060/ RX570 not 1070 or 1080... On the other hand if I buy used GTX 980 for 170 €, I could still get OK gaming rig for 660 € (+90 € for win 10). Does this combo sound better?

If you are on a budget, yeah. A 6GB 1060 is roughly equal to a 980 in performance and costs more new. You guys are lucky in the UK/Europe not having to deal with the insane GPU prices we are in North America thanks to Ethereum cryptocurrency mining. Even used GTX 980s are going for $100+ more than they were just a few months ago.

Yes it's worth it. All those components may be a few years old but still cost double that purchased today. The Fractal Design R5 is a good quiet plain box - Quiet without much loss of cooling - Makes a difference in daily use (not even going to listen to people who haven't tried a quiet box).
The i7 4790K goes as fast as any software will allow for many years, practically speaking, and it's versatile (in 5 years you may want to make it into a bitchin server.
Also, with these ultrawide monitors gaining popularity and coming down in price, multiple computers on one screen for absurd multitasking and your combo will be useful for a decade.
