1. make sure to buy the card from a maker that has a warranty that goes with the card, like MSI or ASUS
they dont care where you got it from, make sure the card still has warranty as it is based on date of manufacture

2. buy it from a place like ebay, that guarantees the item you bought works or your money back

3. pay with paypal


run a gpu benchmark, make sure the score is in line with the performance of the card you are buying

If you are talking eBay or Amazon, a trusted seller with a history, preferably only dealing with PC parts. The other option is buying a factory refurb from Amazon or NewEgg. Otherwise you are flying blind, so to speak. You never know how long someone may have overclocked their GPU or how hot they let it run.
