So I built my friend a pc over summer break to play over watch so I did, and a month later he started to complain about it being slow so I picked it up checked on it so after fixing that issues I notice that the the psu is making a nasty sound coil wined at a google page... it buzzing pretty loud and is making a crackling sound also while playing games. So I know it was not good news. So he going on vacation next week and I told him while you are on vacation go buy a new power supply that more that 500watt and I told him to send me a pick so he doesn't get the $12 specials like on ebay . The one he has now is a thermaltake tr2 500watt and I got it new in the box. And I thought it would be decent, but I was wrong.

+1 for Isokolon, and agreed. Also, PSUs usually don't make PCs slow - they can cause instability, blue screens, power offs or white smoke in worst instance. But performance issues are a different thing, you will need to look elsewhere, that's why we need full build data.

The slow/performance I fixed way before this post he installed haste a wifi routing what ever it is. And like most programs like it installed more than one thing causing the system to be slow every time it booted up and cpu ussage I know that a hard drive can slow it down but I know that wasn't the cause, so I install malware bytes to remove some pup. and then I removed all the junk software, and that made the system the speed it was when he got it. The other issue was one ram stick was loose since and was showing 4gb of ram he takes it to lan party with him and it gets bumped around so I fixed that by reciting it.
What I'm asking is that did I make the right decision to tell him to replace it because I knew it was gonna go out soon epically when I herd cracking sounds from the coils plus the loud whining and when I got it I new it wasn't a true 500watt . It just makes me mad that it didn't even last a year a rosewill 480w outlast it and the rosewill was getting pushed out of it comfort zone.
His spec is a fx 4100 6gb ram 1tb hard drive gtx 660 and the crappy 500watt thermalbreak Motherboard a 980DE3/U3S3.
