DIR-655 Slow LAN Speeds

I have cable internet and DIR-655 router. Hardware Version: B1 Firmware Version: 2.11NA. I upgraded my internet from 60mbps to 300mbps yesterday. Until then, I've never had a problem with this router.

Without the router, from the cable modem to my computer, I get 340mbps download consistently. When I send the internet through the router, I can only reach 144-150mbps download. To be clear, I am talking about a wired connection and my desktop's ports and cables are capable of gigabit speeds. Something about my current router's settings are limiting the download. The DIR-655 has gigabyte LAN ports, and my computer indicates it is connected at 1Gbps, so I really don't know what is going on.

Any ideas? I wanted to see if I could fix this before I go buy another router. I know this one is several years old, but technically, it should give me the speeds I have over wired LAN.

I also set "WAN PORT SPEED" to 1000mbps in the setting but that didn't seem to do anything for me.

Routers actually have to do a fair bit of processing work over a basic networking switch. Most will have no trouble with 60mbps, but 300mbps is a totally different story. You actually need a higher end router, or one advertising "hardware NAT" or a genuine gigabit routing to achieve those kind of download speeds through a router. I understand your router has a gigabit WAN port, but that does not mean it's capable of routing internet traffic at anything like those kind of speeds.

Unfortunately a new router is the solution.

It's the slow Ubicom CPU in the router that's limiting routing speeds. Over at Smallnetbuilder there are now about 20 tested routers that can saturate gigabit internet service, at least with hardware acceleration turned on.

Note that QoS generally cannot be used with hardware acceleration so things drop into software using the CPU, so it's a good idea to buy one of these 20 even if your internet is presently "only" 340Mbit. That way you have some excess capacity and powerful multicore ARM CPUs to turn on some extra features you find you may want to use.

Thank you for the replies. I'm going to pick up a Asus RT-AC1900P later today and hopefully that will resolve my issues.

EDIT: New router fixed my speed issues! I get 344mbps down on speedtests. But my ping during speedtests went from 10ms to 17ms :-/ I am surprised a faster router is causing that kind of increased latency.

EDIT 2: Just confirmed, without the router I get 10/11ms during speedtests. With my old DIR-655 I was getting 10ms speedtest results... why the big jump to 17/18ms with the new, faster router?
