I have old machine with
motherboard: Gigabyte G31M-S2L
processor: Coore 3 Duo E7200

I was thinking to utilize it as home theater pc, with external hard disk connected to it, and plex server running on it. (Should I? Is it a bad idea?)

Currently I have 2GB RAM. Sticker on current RAM reads:
DDR2 Dynet DNHMAU2GC8FER1-A6-C
2GB PC2-5300U-555

My machines full specs validated by cpuid can be found here: http://valid.x86.fr/0msnnl

I was thinking to increase its RAM. (Should I?) Which one will be suitable?
Should I but 2x2GB DIMMs and abandon current one for compatibility surety?

Actually for HTPC, it should be fine. I was thinking that you wanted to do some gaming. For Ram, you can upgrade only 2 more gb of ram because your motherboard only supports a maximum of 4gb of ddr2 ram.

Instead of increasing the ram, you should go with a new CPU/MOBO combo. Your CPU and Motherboard are really outdated, and your better off just upgrading to a better MOBO/CPU. To answer your question, most DDR2 240 pin ram sticks will work with it.

Isnt it (processor+mobo) enough for HTPC. Mostly it will be my backup machine, where I will be storing all my audio and videos and streaming from...So is it really that poor?
