What Happens when all my VRAM is in use?

I'll start with system specs.
Processor: i7 7700
GPU: 8 GB VRAM ASUS Strix 1080
Ram: 16 GB(2x8GB) Ballistix Sport DDR4
Various Hard drives totalling to 4TB
Motherboard: Asus z270F

So when I'm playing ark I'm running dual monitors and watching my GPU's status in Asus GPU Tweak II. I recently saw the VRAM Usage get up to 7.5 GB.

My question is what happens when the VRAM hits max? does it automatically start using my primary RAM or at this point does the game crash? This is my first custom build from the ground up so I'm trying to figure out everything I can with the difference between VRAM and DRAM. I just don't want to hurt my GPU by overloading it.

Solution
Don´t panic, if the VRAM would hit max., the game would slow down. You can´t overload a GPU.

Like CPUs, GPUs will throttle if temperatures would hit max. So that´s the only thing that´s matter to lifetime

the only tool I trust in this is MSI Afterburner, uninstall Asus GPU Tweak II

The GPU isn't really getting overheated. It stays stable at around 64 Degrees Celsius under the heaviest load. my concern was just the Ram limitations. But thanks anyhow!
