you can use any 3.5" (laptop style) sized HDD in your play station 3. Sony has step by step instructions for all PS3 models on there website for replacing the stock drive
Any 2.5" laptop drive that is below 9.5mm in thickness will work watch out for the high capacity 12.5mm drives as they will be to thick to insert into the PS3. You will also need a USB thumb drive for installing the firmware onto the HDD, and you will also need the PS3 mounting bracket as the super slim 12GB doesn't have a mounting cage for HDD's. You should be able to find the mounting bracket via a google search.
Another way of extending storage is a external HDD as Sony recently added external HDD support in a recent firmware update.
Laptop drives are 2.5" you for sure are not going to be able to fit a full sized 3.5" drive into the PS3 they are huge. A 2.5" drive is smaller than most cell phones and could fit easily in the palm of your hand or pocket. Whereas a 3.5" drive is a beast that is almost as big as your PS3 controller.

correct, that's the right kind of HDD. just look for 2.5" HDD and don't worry about if they say the drive is compatible with the play station 3 or not. also make sure they tell you the brand name as that link is very vague on details
