I was playing a game earlier today when the screen flickered with green artifacts for a split second, and then the game froze and the computer crashed. When I tried re-starting the computer, I was getting a black screen with no cursor right after the windows logo.
I've spent all afternoon trying to trouble shoot. I had a bunch of problems after upgrading to Windows 10, and had read people were having issues with AMD drivers causing the black screen. I finally gave up and formatted my SSD and did a clean install of Windows 7. Was finally able see things. Start downloading drivers for everything, and once I restarted the computer after installing AMD drivers, I get the same black screen.
I did figure out that I can boot into safe mode just fine, since windows default display drivers are being used.
I did a complete uninstall of any display drivers using the DDU tool, and was able to get back into normal mode.
I next tried downloading an earlier driver version. After restarting, it appeared the drivers were installed correctly, and I would see the AMD software, but the computer was not seeing my HD7850 in the device manager. I went ahead and updated to the "recommended" driver version, and again, black screen.
At this point I'm at a loss. Could it be the GPU itself? I made sure it's fully seated in the PCIe slot, I even switched out PSU connectors. Made sure PCIe is the default in the BIOS.
What I'm having a hard time understanding, is if the GPU were fried, how can I still see anything on my tv, since I am plugged into the cards HD port?
Any help? I'm basically stuck using on board graphics if i want to use my computer at all.
