I'm in a bind deciding which route i should go in upgrading my pc. I really want to try ryzen but from the benchmarks ive seen it either performs onpar or in some games worse than what i currently have, so im finding it hard to justify spending the money on ryzen. I currently have and xeon e3-1250 v2 gtx 1070 16 gb ram. So i roll the dice get ryzen and hope firmware and patches boost the performance or should i stay with intel.

Truth be told, when Skylake, then Kaby Lake, then Ryzen came out, each time I thought about upgrading from my Ivy i5, but after a few days I dismissed the idea. All of my games run well, and lately I don't run any productivity apps that I particularly care if they finish slightly sooner. I replaced my video card when it died with a newer one of about the same speed, but would've kept using my old card had it not died.

The last few times I've gotten bonuses I've just put a little extra toward my student loans.

nothing really i just wanted to get somewhat current but maybe i should just wait 6 months to a year before deciding.

My own choice was 7700K/Z270, but, if a live streamer, a good/great choice could be made for an R5/1600-based rig(6c/12t) or R7/1700 if budget permits...; all of these require DDR4, of course...

You might be able to find an I7 compatible for your mainboard to hold you over for a year to 18 months....or more.

His Xeon is an I7, 4 core 8 threads, it just doesn't have an IGP

I think ryzen would be m=a sideways move for you.
What is your budget?
In what way is your current pc lacking?

If you simply have some cash to spend on an upgrade;
1. Buy a ssd for your C drive if you have and not already done so.
2. Buy a good large 1440p or 4k monitor.

I'm on a 2500K and the next release Coffeelake 6 core 12 thread replacing the 4 core 8 thread I7 at hopefully the same $330 on the 1151 Z370 board may finally get me to rebuild.

I had almost jumped to an X99 5820k with microcenter selling the cpu for $299. Didn't like the $200 motherboards though and quad channel DDR4 that was expensive at the time. Missed the MSI X99 3 way sli with 28 lane cpu for $130 deal just before skylake came out.
