Twin Xeon Motherboard: Can it be converted to gaming machine running Windows 10 Pro?

I just purchased a server with twin Xeon X5460 LGA771 with 16 Gb DDR2. Is there any way to convert this to a conventional computer or gaming machine? I have a use for a server, but it would be more fun to convert it if possible. Thanks, Jim

It all really comes down to the BIOS. But more or less you should be able to install an OS to the hard drive if you are installing from a disc. If trying to install from USB you have to see if the BIOS will allow it. It can be a tricky thing when it comes to servers.
Be sure that you install Windows 10 pro as it'll have the ability to recognize and properly is the disk CPU setup.

You might get about 60% to 85% the performance of an FX-4350 in CPU-bound gaming scenarios.

Hard to guess though. I'm using PASSMARK for single thread but if there's actually TWO CPU's there then your performance will tend to be worse than having ONE CPU due to how these motherboards work in sharing data between CPU's.

If you've got a cheap GPU, and want to experiment for fun go for it but I wouldn't invest much in this machine.

Also, not sure what OS you would use. If you want to use as a server then you don't want to be running a traditional W7,8,10 desktop OS that's optimized for gaming.

Probably more issues than I've though of, but it's come up before and never seemed to be a good idea beyond a "just for fun" kind of thing.

*You can download Windows 10 for free initially with (AFAIK) a 30-day window to test things out. So if you want to mess around, AND it has a x16 PCIe slot for a GPU, AND you have a spare or cheap GPU of say R7-260X or better then fire it up and see how it goes. W10 may just have all the drivers you need to get running. May.

If you're serious about gaming though then just NO. Buy a console for cheap, or plan a gaming PC. (BTW, most good graphics cards are way overpriced and may remain so for months due to cryptomining).

Thanks for all the helpful responses. I only paid $50.00 for this rig so I won't be heartbroken if it's a dog. The purchase price included a 1 TB Western Digital HDD and a 600W EVGA PSU so it's definitely not a loss. As I mentioned, I have a more server oriented application that will work just fine with Ubuntu server.

Well Linus did a demo of doing 'similiar' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epIlB49SNTI
Might want to take his notes, but he did make a gamer's rig out of it with a 980.

well, at least watch the video link I posted. CPU is OC'd and does hit 100% on all four cores at times (so game is very well threaded. yay.) so it wouldn't do nearly as well in most titles I agree.

Still, 60FPS much of the time at High/Very High settings in GTA5 is impressive for such an old CPU

There are a few other videos with that system such as Witcher 3.

Agree I linked also actual tested game play, Battlefront, Tomb Raider, etc. it played real well considering.

Well guys & gals(?), Thanks for all the help and research on this topic, but the more I look at it, the more I think that I'm trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. As I mentioned earlier, I have a need for a server and I think I will deploy this unit as a server. I'm a ham radio operator and we have a project that is described on http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/ I've got a few real gaming motherboards, so maybe I'll do something with them. Thanks for all the help and encouragement, Jim
