How do I get 8 GB to show usable on my Dell Laptop as it only shows 2.93?

My Dell Laptop (Win Pro 7) has 8 GB ram installed. However it only shows that 2.93 are usable. How do you get 8 GB to be usable? System Configuration does not show where you can change the ram settings.

Another possibility is that the chipset doesn;t support the size of modules you have installed. Go to Crucial.com and see what they recommend for your specific system.

When you see that only 2.93GB is usable, is your system using 5.07GB at the time?
For me I have 8GB installed and 2.7 is in use right now and 5.3 is "available"

Do you have 64 bit OS installed? (Task Manager/performance should show roughly 7.x GB available....; however, 32 bit OS is limited to 3.5 GB of RAM, and, some of it is dedicated to onboard GPU, which might be the case for you)

Control Panel/system should tell you if you have 32/64 bit installed...
