AMD athlon x4 860k and Asus NVIDIA GTX 950 not working well together in gaming? What could be the problem?

So I have built this first PC of mine almost a year ago, however it has pretty much always been dropping fps on every game. Mostly in crowded places. Thing is the lag is the same on Ultra settings and Low settings. The only game that has constant 60 or higher fps is League Of Legends. I'm pretty sure that this build should be running most games at solid 60 fps, on at least medium settings.
Please help!

Specs:
AMD athlon x4 860k black edition
Asus NVIDIA GTX 950
8 GB kingston ram
ASRock motherboard (not sure which one, and I don't think the motherboard is the problem)

It seems that CPU overheating is the problem indeed. Any solution to this? I'm pretty sure that my CPU cooler should be working properly...

The stock coolers are usually sufficent. Might just be a case of re applying new thermal paste (cleaning off the old) and making sure to re mount the cooler properly.

Better yet would be to get a upgraded cooler like the 212 evo, which would bring down the temps a lot and allow some overclocking for more cpu performance.

See I was thinking of re-applying the thermal paste, however since this has been happening ever since I built this PC I thought that wasn't the problem. Will update after I've done it. Thanks for the help :)

I've put the new thermal paste and cleaned the cooler exhaust/fan. HWMonitor shows that it's still at around 70-80 Celsius while gaming, and the same kind of spikes are happening.

Everything is in place and mounted right. However, I have noticed something strange. In bios my CPU temps seem alright now (around 40 C), but HWMonitor still shows temps of around 70-80 while gaming. Could this be some kind of software problem? Also, in certain CPU monitor programs my temps don't show.

No that's to be expected. The temps in bios would be a lot lower than while gaming. If your temps are that high gaming you need to buy a better cooler you'll still have fps drops in most games in heavy spots as that CPU isn't very strong, but getting rid of overheating will certainly help it out some.

AMD OverDrive shows temps of maximum 50 C. Games are still lagging. Starting to think overheating might not be a problem? HWMonitor still shows temps for up to 90 so I'm really confused.
