Ok so 2 days ago I updated my laptop to Windows 8.1 and it took about 2 hours to update, ok, fine. I turned it on after said update and at first things were fine, until the laptop froze. So I reatarted the laptop and now, for the past like 36 hours, the desktop will disappear for a second, then come back and it takes another second or two for the things on my desktop to come back, and when i finally get something to work, the laptop freezes again. I don't know what's causing it or how to stop it.

Solution
Possible issues:
  • • Display driver
    • Low, bad or dirty RAM
    • Slow CPU or slow power options CPU speed settings

1) Drivers may not be up to date or fully compatible:

  • a) The first thing to do after installing a fresh OS or update, is installing a updated display adapter driver. The default Windows drivers included in the CD/DVD/USB installer may work but not always optimally.

    b) If the laptop had a previous OS it's hardware may not fully support Windows 8. If it's a bit to old, that would make some driver included in the Windows 8 DVD/USB installer cause the issue. Check Computer Management: If you're using a Start Menu, right click on Computer > Manage > Device Manager. If you're using the Windows Start Screen...

If you're using the Windows Start Screen, go to Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Device Manager... and check the hardware components with yellow exclamation symbols that mean driver issues are present. If no yellow symbols are present move to option 2.

2) If the laptop is a bit to old, it may have RAM issues, due to low or bad RAM.

  • a) If ram size is ok; Check the RAM installation that it's fully seated into the slot, clean the RAM slot and RAM pins even if they don't seem dirty, a very small amount of dust or grime may cause issues. .

    b) Run Memtest86

3) The CPU may be slower than recommended to run Windows 8
  • Or Windows may be using a Power Options Plan setting that throttles down the CPU.

  • a) Check Control Panel > Power Options > Power Saving Plan being used is probably the Power Saver which is the default plan for laptops, and that plan can keep the CPU running slow to save battery power.

    b) Check the Power Plan > Change Advanced Power Savings > Processor Power Management > Processor Idle Disable > Setting > Disable idle.

    c) Or install HWiNFO and as you start it up, select Sensors only > Check the CPU Mhz speed.. if it's running at a fraction of it's maximum megahertz speed, go to the Power Saving Plan and Disable idle. If the CPU is running at maximum megahertz, take a full screenshot of HWiNFO Sensors report and upload it to postimage.com, Tinypic.com, etc.
