Hello,I wanted to upgrade my HP pavilion g6 laptop configuartion. It has Intel Pentium 2020m,which is relatively slow.I wanted to upgrade my processor.Since i am budget strapped i cannot go for a new laptop altogether.Which CPU should i go for? I did a bit of research and found [Intel core i5-2450m] and [AMD a10-4600m].My general use for this laptop is casual gaming (battlefield 4 runs on my laptop on low settings) and coding on Android studio,Visual studio 2012,a bit of Adobe PS etc.
I did try installing Windows 10 but it was really slow on my pc so had to downgrade back to windows 7.
Full CPU-Z Report :https://valid.x86.fr/a3vsbg
It has an IVY BRIDGE architecture.
I have upgraded to the latest BIOS too and am a lil worried if the CPU i have chosen will fit in my motherboard or not.
Kindly help me out.Is their any better alternative to the CPU's i have chosen?

Oh...ok. I upgrade G6s quite a bit - I've found HP typically under reports their machine capabilities. It seems odd to me that they would say i5 2450 is the max cpu given that it has 'sandy bridge' microarchitecture and the current processor has 'ivy bridge' - the 2 processors I suggested are both 'ivy bridge' as well and, on paper at least, should be a better fit. I'd be surprised if they didn't work just fine but ...who knows?
Another area HP under reports for the G6 is ram - I think they...

The pavillion g6 can be upgraded to maximum an i5 480M which is dual core one.

Like you said before, the i5 2450m seems to be the right upgrade for it
before you change your processor, make sure you update to the latest bios

Also look at the price of a new i5 or 17 based laptop at best buy before you upgrade.

Something is wrong in your description, you cannot upgrade the same laptop MB with both an AMD and an Intel CPU, they are not compatible "...I did a bit of research and found [Intel core i5-2450m] and [AMD a10-4600m]..."

CPU swaps on a laptop are really hard. Goto youtube and look at disassembly videos and see if you want to do this. Note the cooling system that supported your lower wattage pentium may not work well for the new CPU.

Also clean or replace the CPU cooler fan while you are in there if you do upgrade.

Thanks a lot "thomas123321"....can now go for an upgrade with much ease........and yes 'tsnor'.....I realised it much later that we cannot install an AMD processor on an Intel chipset.....thanks you too....

Hi bro, can i upgrade my HP g6 pavilion laptop with i3-2330M to Core i7-2860QM, i7-3632QM, i7-3740QM or i7-3840QM all these processors work on same socket Socket G2 / rPGA988B. Is there any possibility?

I would say yes there is a good possibility - i think the best bet would be the 2860QM because it has "Sandy Bridge ' microachitecture which matches your current 2330M. The other 3 processors have 'Ivy Bridge' so that could be problematic.

Here's the thing though - your current processor is 35 watt - the 2860QM is 45 watt - which means more heat. I think you'd be ok though as long as you thoroughly clean the cooling system and use good quality thermal paste. I've replaced a number of 35W processors with 45 watt ones and have yet to have an issue.

Needless to say there's no guaranty that it would work but .... if it did, the performance increase would be substantial!

Brother, first of all thank so much much for response. however I got into some different problem, had some big issue yesterday, nothing to do with CPU upgrade. Its just my g6 pavilion was getting too hot so thought to give it some cleaning. Had to open each single piece of laptop just to clean fan, remove dust absolute nightmare. Here is sequence of events:

1. Disassembled laptop, each single screw, battery, dvd, ram, wifi, sdd, keyboard, removed all cables etc.
2. Opened Heat sink however one of corner metal thing (possibly called fin??) broke while taking heat sink out.
3. Cleaned fan
4. Cleaned CPU & bottom of heat sink with Alcohol swabs, put new arctic cooling thermal compound
5. Put heat sink, fan and everything else back in order. Re-assembled!!
6. Started laptop and now got no display at all. Power, caps lock and wifi LEDs are ON on keyboard. Fan is ON. Laptop making normal sound as it normally does. No beeps etc. Laptop temperature seems normal.
7. Tried to connect to additional LCD using VGA and HDMI no luck
8. Have tried removing battery and hold power button down for 30-60 secs couple of times and tried restart still no luck.

Have no idea whats possibly could be wrong. Please advise if there are any options left.

Thank you

Update 05/OCT/2017: Finally managed to sort out laptop, display is back. had to re-open each single component and reassembled. Its been working fine now and so far. Dropping plan for cpu upgrade however fairly sure and agreed with robert600, i7-2860QM should work. I would also say HP g6 pavilion got worst design. Opening whole laptop just to clean fan doesn't make any sense. A big NO to HP laptops in future...
