Add more storage using PCIe?

Hi.

I am using an old Lenovo Thinkstation C20 from 2012. I'm running Win7 and the system feels stable and powerful enough for what I do, so I'd rather stick with it if I can find a way to add some high-speed storage. Currently all onboard SATA slots are used, even a eSata. But I could still use one or two extra disks. Unfortunately, the system offers only USB 2.0 connections, so I was wondering if I could use the PCIe slots for that.

On the board, there are:
2 x PCIe x16 gen2.0 (one is used for graphics card, the other empty)
1 x PCIe x1 gen2.0 (empty)
1 x PCIe x4 gen1.0 (empty)

Any idea if I could connect one or more ssd (or m.2) drives through those?

Thanks.

Thanks. I'm new to pcie storage and still have lots of questions.

Is there a difference between SATA m.2 and pci express m.2?
Should I look specifically for pci express m.2 modules?
Would SATA m.2 modules work as well, with all the SATA ports on my mobo already occupied? (or is that irrelevant)
Can I insert more than one m.2 module in the available slots of my system? In this case, what would be best speed wise? To connect two modules on a single adapter on the gen 2.0 x16 slot, use the gen 2.0 x1 slot for the second module - or even the gen 1.0 x4 slot?

Thanks again.
