this has been a problem for several games i have played. All of these games run fine on my system, no lag, stuttering, or FPS drops. but all of a sudden the game just locks up. the video freezes, sound either loops or stops, and i'm usually unable to alt+tab out, but a ctrl+alt+delete might get me out of the game but i am left with a black screen and unable to do anything else. here are my specs:

Intel i5-6500
Asus Z170-A memory
HyperX Fury 8GB 2400mhz
Gigabyte GTX 760 2GB
Corsair CX600M PSU

any help is very welcome

Oh well that's another story. Did not know it happens all the time. How are your temperatures and load during this? You can use HWMonitor or HWInfo for temperature readouts. You can look at cpu load in task manager, and for gpu you can use something like gpu-z.
You can try recreating the scenario by stress testing the cpu (Prime95 can do this), memory (Memtest86) and gpu (Furmark). Monitor temps closely while doing this, so they don't reach critical. Here's a nice article describing how to do this:

That should then give you a good idea which component is it that's stalling.

Also, I assume you've already tried downloading and...

Er...is this an issue? I mean this happens to me with games, especially if they're demanding ones like witcher series or tomb raider or hitman. I take it as par for the course, after you've been playing for many hours. Games just do that sometimes. If your system doesn't freeze constantly so that you have trouble playing at all, and doesn't freeze outside the game, then you're fine. I know my system isn't even too stressed, I monitor it so I know it's nothing to do with hardware, and I monitor event errors so I do know it's the game or steam usually.
Games are far from perfect, they will freeze and crash occasionally and some more than occasionally depending on how well they're coded and optimized. Don't worry too much about it unless it totally makes you unable to play it.

yes, of course it is an issue. this happens almost every day and only 10-15 minutes into a gaming session. it also requires me to restart my PC. this is very annoying and shouldn't be happening.

Also, I assume you've already tried downloading and installing latest graphics drivers for your video card, that should always be your first solution for anything freezing/crashing in games, so if you haven't done it, do so first before everything else.
