A while ago I noticed that my 128gb SSD had too little storage for my needs. Ever since I have been in the market for a new. I figured that if I was to get a new SSD I might as well upgrade to the new PCIe interface, as I heard that it was much faster. Are these NVME PCIe drives actually faster? On paper they are proven faster but do they actually offer a tangible performance difference in practice? I have had my eye on a Samsung drive, but they are a little pricey sometimes. Do you guys know of any 250GB to 500Gb PCie SSDs under $150. Ideally I would like to pay under $100. I am willing to buy used (is that a bad idea?).

Also, I had concerns that my old FM2+ motherboard would not support it. Does the ASUS A78M-A
FM2+ motherboard support PCIe SSDs? I am thinking about upgrading my CPU and motherboard anyways, but I wonder if can start using a PCIe SSD now? If not, what sort of motherboard does support it.

Your mobo's bios has to support NVMe for the PCIe SSD to be able to boot. I looked at the Asus bios updates, but the readme info is skimpy. Most likely it doesn't support NVMe. Soi the add-on PCIe board is not going to work. If you build a new system, all the latest Intel and AMD mobo's support NVMe and Windows 10 includes the drivers. So, be sure the mobo has NMVe support and it's M.2 port is tied to the PCIe x4 slot.

Reading the motherboard's manual I think you may be right. I guess it's time to pick out a new CPU and motherboard!
