Hi all

Hi!

Quick question, i'm building my friend a PC so he can join in with some gaming.

Im giving him a case, psu, and other bits so the only thing he needs to buy is a Mobo, CPU and ram...

The GPU im giving him is an AMD Sapphire RX 470 4gb.

he is going buy an i5 2500k, (he is on a budget and i think this is still a great processor for entry level gaming)

looking at mother boards for under £100 im curious if he will run into any issues when pairing a modern(ish) card with this type of motherboard.

I'm looking at a few intel boards and a few msi/gigabyte variants. i think the z77 looks to be the best but prices are just to high atm.

Any help/advice on this build would be appreciated.

cheers!

Solution
A Z77 mobo will not get cheaper as it is no longer manufacturing. Kinda like DDR2 RAM (more expensive than DDR3 if you look into it). I recommend you friend to step his budget just a bit and get a Ryzen R5 1400 and a B250 chipset mobo. Best to pair it with 16gb of RAM or 8 if he can't afford it.
To answer your question: An RX 470 is compatible with any modern mobo (with PCie 2.0 or 3.0). Also, using PCie 2.0 will not impact performance.

Solution
actually, for i5 2500k, an unlocked CPU, z77 is the best and only choice, since other variant mobo wouldn't support OC which is the main feature of the K-version, i suggest u find a used one if budget is a problem. btw, PCIe is backward compatible so you wouldn't have problem putting the RX at any of the mobo.

RX470 uses a pcie x16 slot which will be present on any modern motherboard.
You are ok there.

If buying used, a I5-2500K and a Z chip motherboard is ok if the price is right.

If buying new, go with current kaby lake. and ddr4 ram.
G4560 and I3-7100 will perform better in most games and the underlying motherboard can support many future upgrades.
