I have a Corsair h100i v2 liquid cooler. It has a fan/power cable that connects to the CPU fan header. That fine. However what about the USB cable? For a motherboard without a USB2 header e.g Asus z270i.

Its does however have a aio pump header which is also 4pin like the USB link cable for the cooler. Is this recommend to connect? Or will it break the pump?

AIO_PUMP header is for powering case fan or AIO pump. It's same as any regular fan header with only the difference of higher amperage rating than regular fan header.
If you plug the USB cable into AIO_PUMP header then you'll fry the pump control chip.

To control your AIO via Corsair Link, you need to connect your AIO USB cable to the USB header on your MoBo. Since your MoBo lacks internal USB 2.0 headers, you need to use internal USB 2.0 to 3.0 adapter,

With this adapter, you can connect your AIO USB cable to the MoBo via the USB 3.0 header.

Another option would be buying micro USB to USB adapter and route the cable outside of the PC, by plugging one end...

I've done so on my Skylake build since i ran out of internal USB 2.0 headers on my MoBo. My HUE+ is connected this way.
