How to chose configuration of DDR3 memory?

older operating systems like f.i. Windows XP cannot use more that 3GB of memory. My question is whether there is any problem using more memory in the machine? Memory chps get bigger and bigger all the time, and 4 or 8GB devices are quite common today. I just wonder, does it mean anything if you use 8GB or more in a machine running Windows XP?

It will still only read 4GB and for a system running XP, I don't think it will matter going from dual channel (2x2) to single channel (1x8GB). That computer can't be newer than 8 years if you are using XP.

To make use of more than 3-4GB of RAM you need a 64-bit operating system and an x64-based processor.

edit: there are 32 and 64-bit versions of Win XP. Check the System view in Control Panel to see what OS you have AND if you have a x64bit CPU system.

Windows XP (32Bit) is limited to 4GB not 3 (more like 3.8). Anyways if you add more memory the OS will not use it and only some applications will use the extra 4, but it is uncommon because extra code has be written to basically accept a second block of 4GB but the OS will never see or use that extra 4GB.

Also don't ever use XP 64bit. It got an offical release but no one supported it and it basically still in a Alpha-Beta to this day. I hate the XP64 computer at my work. Such a pain to trouble shoot.

I understand that. What I was thinking was more about whether there would be a problem if I chose a single 4GB strip or even an 8GB instead of the 'traditional' 2x2GB configuration?
