I have been considering upgrading my old cpu(q6600) to a x5460. I wanted to know which would be better and if it is worth buying the x5460 that is $10-$15. I plan on overclocking the x5460 to 4ghz and my q6600 is already at 3ghz, so if you compare these 2 at these clock speeds which would be better? I know the best option would be to build a whole new system but I am tight on money, so I would like to know if i should keep my q6600 or buy a x5460.

Juice really does not seem worth the squeeze here.

At the end of the day it is still a system nearing 10 years old, it will still be just as insufficient for modern tasks then it was before.
Best case scenario you are gong from having 15% of modern computer performance to 16%, not significant in the grand scheme of things, even more when you risk damaging parts and making it 0%.

Your motherboard probably doesn't support the Xeon by default. You may have to modify the BIOS to get it to work at all. The X5460 CPU was a 120W CPU at stock speeds. My guess it goes up significantly at 4Ghz. You better have a stout motherboard and good cooling for the VRMs.

Yes I planned to do the 771 to 775 mod to make the cpu work in my motherboard and planned to get better cooling. I do have a 700w psu so I am pretty sure that it will work, but was wondering if it was worth it.

FWIW, a 45nm quad like that would idle at 70w and use ~200w at maximum load depending on how much voltage you need to get there.

For about any task but compression or games it would be as fast as a modern 35w low-voltage i3 or a standard Sandy/Ivy Bridge vintage i3 (65 and 55w, respectively). If you can do it on the cheap it is well worth it, particularly if you don't pay for electricity.

BTW I suggest spending $24 for a premodded version with the notches cut (so you don't have to cut the socket) and welded pads (instead of a sticker).

X5460 owner here! Just spend a bit more to get a premodded xeon, as BFG-9000 said.
For the money, it is worth it. Keep in mind that you need to install a custom bios, or else you are gonna have stability issues.
If your motherboard has a good overlocking chipset, you have a decent cooler, and you know how to overlock, the performance gains over the q6600 are massive.
As far as i remember, a stock q6600 will score about 240cb in cinebench r15. I got about 330cb on my x5460 when stock. Overclocking it at 4.3Ghz, and i got 462cb. Which is almost double the performance of a stock q6600.
