Pc audio out only works when plugged into monitor.

My headphones/ speakers only worked when plugged into the audio out port of my monitor connected to my GPU via HDMI, my mobo and case both have audio and mic out ports but they do not work, if my speakers are on when i plug them into the mobo or case they make a pop noise but no sound.

Your default audio output is likely set to be HDMI instead of onboard soundcard, hence why it goes to the monitor.

edit: Right click on sound volume icon in taskbar, select playback devices and scroll down to see speakers/headphones, select those as default instead.
