Hi, i just bought a computer from a friend recently, the spec is listed below;

HP Compaq 4000 Pro SFF PC
Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5800 @ 3.20GHz, 3200MHz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)
Installed RAM 4GB

Its been running slow so i have opened up the case to check if it needs cleaning ect. and i discovered that it only has 1 RAM stick installed (Samsung 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600u-09-11-B1) (M378B5273DHO-CH9 1121)

My question is if i install a second RAM stick would this potentially speed up my system a bit?

I also recently got a larger screen and since then the compouter has slowed down alot more on certain programs, such as a few browser games i play have been unplayable due to the incredible lag im getting. Not sure if its the AVG anti virus i recently installed causing this or that i installed a fairly decent widescreen monitor. To be honest the AVG was installed a few days before getting the screen and i didnt have lag on this scale untill i changed my monitor, and from what ive read over certain threads a screen cannot cause performance issues?

Thanks in advance guys, if you need more information please let me know and i'll do my best to provide more.

The lag is probably since your new screen has increased resolution than your older screen, meaning your computer is working hard in the graphics department. A graphics card is the upgrade you are looking for. I have experienced what it is like to have 4 Gb of RAM and when I upgraded to 8 Gb, I saw a significant increase in speeds when it came to browsing the internet or certain programs and games.

A RAM upgrade is a good idea but for the long term you need a graphics card (A cheap one will do). DDR3 rams are fairly cheaper so I recommend you buy a set of 2, 4 Gb modules. DDR3-1333MHz as mentioned by Lutfij should be good.
PS: 8 Gb is the max ram your system can handle.

It wouldn't speed up the system to a great extent but it will help with multitasking. If you really want to speed things up, you're going to need to install an SSD. If you must install ram, you should do so via a kit. mixing and matching ram sticks is a very bad practice since it only does the end user more harm then good due with the need for incessant troubleshooting when the system doesn't boot up.

Please list your specs like so:
Prebuilt system's SKU:
Monitor's make and model:

What is your ram usage when viewed in task manager when your system is idling at desktop?

Per this page you should be able to max out your ram capacity to 8GB. Since the motherboard is based ona B43 chipset, you should look at DDR3-1333MHz 1.8v or even 1.65v kits as a viable upgrade.

Thank you for replying. I was actually intending to possibly upgrade ram to 8 GB after a while and a Graphics card seems like a good idea too. I found this as a cheap GPU https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics+Cards/NVIDIA+GeForce/GeForce+GT+710/ASUS+GeForce%C2%AE+GT+710+-+2GB+Passive+Silent+Graphics+Card+?productId=65593

Also regarding the RAM upgrades here are 2 products i found
https://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/8GB+%282x4GB%29+1333MHz+Corsair+Value+Select+DDR3+?productId=51173

Not sure whether the gpu is compatible with my system though?
