Hello,
I have been holding off on upgrading for a while. I am now wanting to pick up some oculus rifts to use for various games like Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen and so on. Below are my specs. Compared to the computers that the oculus team suggests, my build should be fine if i upgrade my AMD FX-8320 to an 8350, and buy a GTX 1080 video card.

But going from a 8320 to an 8350 doesnt seem like much of a jump, wonder if i can safely just overclock my 8320 :D then.

What suggestions do you have? I dont want to go crazy on prices because at that point I might as well build a new PC, but the oculus is already 650ish dollars and i'm trying not to spend as much as possible.

I have seen several threads about ditching AMD and going to Intel. I havent gone with intel stuff for 17 years because back then i had nothing but problems. I'm sure in that time they have probably gotten much better :D.

Thanks

My PC Specs:

EVGA GeForce GTX 770 4GB Video Card
AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor
RAM (16GB) Patriot Viper Xtreme 16GB 240 Pin SDRAM DDR3 1866 ( PC3 15000)
Windows: 10 64 bit
Raidmax 850AE 850W ATX 12v (Power supply)
Asus M5A99X EVO AM3+ AMD 990X Sata 6GB (motherboard)
ASUS Xonar Essence STX (Sound Card)
HDD: SAMSUNG 850 PRO 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7KE256BW
Extra HDD: A few WD drives for installing games and programs.

I think your plan is pretty sound right now.

My suggestion would be to just leave the CPU alone. The extra 10% speed you'll gain isn't worth the money. If you really want a rocking CPU, you'll need to upgrade the entire system.

Otherwise a GTX 1080 would provide all the power you need for VR gaming. It's in your best interest to buy a GTX 1080 right now. All of the more reasonable cards are super inflated.

The rest of your computer seems good.

I am also the member of the budget AM3+ group, and it's just awful.
The fact that the G4560 almost performs the same as the FX 8350 is sad and depressing to me.
Do not buy the 8350 because the 8320,8350 and 8370 are the same, just higher clocks.
If you got any room in your budget to switch to the LGA 1151 or AM4 socket, Ryzen, i5 or even the Pentium G4560 (G4560 might bottleneck the 1080 too but you'll be on a newer socket so you can just slap an i5 or i7 on your motherboard if you ever wanted to in the future), I'd highly suggest you do that, or just sell your current PC to get some extra money because you might bottleneck the 1080 with the 8320.
Your current build is decent except for the GPU and the PSU, motherboard ain't the best but it does the job.

Awesome feedback guys, thank you. Yea I did not think there would be a point to upgrade the processor. At least getting the 1080 video card, i would be able to build an intel gaming rig, and bring the video card over. I planned on trying to build a new machine around christmas anyway if money allows (and the wife lol). I think that is what i will do, keep an eye out on 1080 video cards, and start planning an intel build.

Just throwing some things together based off of some oculus ready machines, this isnt too bad of a build then right?

Also i'm not used to using the pcpartpicker, that electric symbol up top is stating how much wattage that build would use correct? if so i can drop the powersupply to at least a 650 and save some money.

This is my current case. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811108376 I figured i would use my case, hard drives and such since the main build that matters is motherboard, processor, ram, power supply.

I'd suggest you get the i7-7700K, it's a little better and 6 dollars cheaper.
You could drop the PSU down to 600w or 650w, depending on if you want to overclock the 6700k or 7700k, if you do, keep it around 750w and even if it's more than needed, it's no harm, that air cooler will keep it cool, but water cooling is, of course, better option and promises lower temps.
The wattage calculator on pcpartpicker is accurate, it calculates the highest and lowest possible watts, you can see the lowest and highest wattage if you click on it.

Thanks GambinoGod,
So then something like this - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nfcqnn

I see a warning, that is just indicating i need to upgrade my bios before anything else right?

Some Intel H170 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Kaby Lake-S CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.
