I found Windows XP SP3 on another machine, burnt it to a CD with ImgBurn (using an old .img file to go with it), then booted and chose R, the Recovery Console, then after some hemming and hawing, I ran fixmbr, and then it rebooted into Windows fine. But I am just lucky that my parition table was not moved by Linux or at least not in a way that was not recoverable. I should really take my backups of the MBR to CD - would have been easier using HDHacker or some similar tool. At least I have Windows. Done for the night. I could also back the files up to a USB stick since I don't have a writeable CD/DVD on that machine, nor an Internet.

The install media is on the hard-drive. It's NTFS and my linux that I have so far cannot read the drive. I would assume that Redhat linux would be able to read ntfs. But I guess it can't without some special driver, I don't know. I'm out of luck.

Every single repair guide that says how to fix the master boot record starts with "Insert the Windows XP cd ...". I don't have the Windows XP cd. I have one cd that I found of Windows XP SP3 debug version. I don't really want that. I don't know where any of my Windows XP CDs are.

That is why I asked if you had the install media. I can't recommend any legit sources to download a XP ISO from. As far as I know, there are none and I wouldn't recommend any non-legit sites. That is a good way to get more than you bargained for (malware).

Why do you want to keep XP?
