How to secure Seagate Expansion Portable Drive

Advice for this luddite (novice), please advise on the best way to secure i.e. password and/or encrypt a Seagate Expansion Portable Drive I've just purchased. There was no security software pre-loaded. Many thanks KB

Most of the time people are here complaining that they can't get data off an external drive because it is encrypted. Think long about your choice. Would a physical lock be a better choice than encryption? Would file level encryption be better than full disk encryption?
