Mixing RAM with different latency

Hi Guys,

My current RAM is this: https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-1600c9d-8gao

My friend is upgrading his PC and has offered to give me his old RAM, which is this: https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-12800cl8d-8gbxm

Now from what I understand, the speed and voltage of both sets is the same, but the latency of the set I currently have is 9-9-9-24, and the latency on his is 8-8-8-24. If I put all 4 sticks in, is it likely to work?

When you mix RAM the system will downclock the faster RAM to match the slower RAM. It might also put the RAM into single channel mode. With only a difference in timings you should be able to make it work. No guarantee though.

It may, or it may not. There is no guarantee until you try it and do a burn-in test to confirm stable operation.

If it works, it will typically be at the slowest frequency and timings of the bunch as the memory controller supports only one frequency and set of timings for all installed RAM.

Thanks for the answer, I don't think I'm going to try, mainly because to get all 4 sticks in I would have to remove my cpu cooler, so if it didn't work it would be a pain to get out again.
