Hi folks at toms, i am still using a 4th gen i7 4770k @ 4.2 GHz. I haven't really felt the need to upgrade my processor yet as i mostly play on 4k but occasionally at 1440p. My GPU is 1080 Ti.

Now let me be clear, i am not really excited about many core ryzen cpu's. Let me put it bluntly, THEY SUCK for gaming. I have many friends at videohelp.com who are into professional video editing and they are super excited because more cores = short encoding times and professional applications like Adobe Premiere and other scales very well with more cores but games do not.

As a matter of fact i play more older games then new ones (like age of empires 3) and i have yet to find a game that can utilize lots of cores efficiently. Yes i do prefer getting more cores but single core performance is much more important then getting and 8c/16t processor to me cheaper.

So that being said, what should be my preferred upgrade options? Budget being around ~$1000 for processor and mobo alone (not counting RAM). I was looking at a great deal on Asus Maximus VIII Extreme but i guess its a 6th gen so i should totally scrap that idea right? Or someone somehow convince me to get Ryzen (keeping in mind single core performance is very important to me).

EDIT: Found that new Maximus IX Formula only have 6 SATA ports, i should mention this that atleast 8 SATA ports is a must have, any mobo without it is a no go.

I also have a Core i7 4770K and GTX 1080 ti. It does great and I see no reason to upgrade yet. Especially because you play games at 4K resolution I see no reason to do the upgrade at all. You're taxing the GPU more than the CPU at 4K. Even an older Sandy Bridge part does great at 4K. I personally tested a Core i5 2500K and it works great at 4K. There is a bit of a bottleneck at 1080p but it still plays great. Though people with high refresh rate monitors would definitely want to upgrade from sandy bridge. I would keep my 4770K until Intel releases a worthy upgrade. I would probably wait until DDR5 is released to upgrade. I don't believe Intel is going to make any major improvements on their CPU's until then.

Yes i am in the same boat as you, i believe there hasn't been enough performance jump so far to warrant an upgrade. I mean if you look at 4 years history between gpu and cpu then there is a huge difference. GPU performance has more then doubled but in processor we are looking at 15-20% increase at most (atleast in games).

I am honestly extremely disappointed at ryzen and AMD. I really had high hopes for ryzen but it ended up a processor for audio/video producers/professionals rather then gamers. Heck when i see benchmark charts i see even 4790k beating ryzen 1800x in most games which are 4 or less cores optimzed (which are like more then 95% of all games).

Any idea what it will cost? Knowing intel i bet it won't be cheap. At no point i want to spend more then $1k on a CPU/Mobo combo for gaming.

At this point it's just guesswork. I'd hope that the 6 core part is $339 or around there. The motherboards will probably be around z270 prices. The 6 core part may be $400.

I would think the 6/12 will be the new I7 $330, and the 4/8 will become I5 $220 would leave 4 core to become I3 $150, Pentium is 2/4 now $100 G4620, and Celeron is 2 core $50. This is speculation though. Still a premium over the Ryzen.

I think that's wishful thinking, i doubt Intel will price its i9 series lower then $500 mark but guess we will have to wait and see.
So for now, its 4770k for me then which means no upgrade.
