Hi-

A beginner, looking for a little advice for how best to structure a VPN

At work, I currently log onto my home computer, via windows remote desktop connection. I would like to create a router based (?) VPN, however, which would allow me to log onto my home network with my iphone. Getting onto my home network would allow me to take advantage of some home automation features, music streaming, etc etc. What would be the best approach to this? If it matters, I'm currently using the router provided with verizon fios service.

Thanks for the help!

I maybe should have been more clear. Putting it in bridge mode will make is LESS complicated. Running router behind router is the one that is more. I would recommend that you use the ethernet port on the ONT but you will have to ask verizon to activate it. This gets rid of their router box completely.

Which router you use for VPN mostly depends how much traffic you are going to run. It put a lot of load on the CPU. Also which router you need depends on your wireless needs.

Since you have a fairly large budget I would look at asus devices. They cost just a little more but the key thing is you can load the asus merlin software image. This has a lot of vpn options. You can get the memory and cpu sizes on the DD-WRT...
First thing is to be sure your router has the VPN software it is not common in a vendor provided router. Replacing the vendor router may not be easy since most those devices are actually modem/router combination units. You may be able to place the unit into bridge mode and use it as a modem only. FIOS should have the option to let you use the ethernet port on the ONT directly and not use a provider router at all. It depends if you also get tv from them.

You can make a vpn router work behind a vendor router but makes it a tricky config even more complex.

Pretty much the if the router has VPN SERVER ability you just load a client into your end device and connect to your router and you will get access to your internal network. It is not that simple though lots of details that must be setup correctly. You also may need to use a dynamic dns service if your wan IP does not stay constant.

Most the better router like tplink and asus that have vpn have some sample help pages that show you how to set the vpn up.

thanks for the reply. to clarify, i assumed i was going to have to buy a new router with the appropriate vpn software. i know you can place the fios router/modem into bridge mode, but i didn't realize this 2nd step would make vpn setup even more complicated. does anyone have any experience using a router based vpn with a fios modem on bridge mode?

any suggested routers $200 or less that would work well for this application?

thanks again ..

You can get the memory and cpu sizes on the DD-WRT compatibility site. I would not load dd-wrt in your case but it is a easy to read list that shows many routers in one place.
