Full system spec:
Intel dx58so
Xeon x5660 2.8ghz 6 core 95w tdp
2x4gb + 2x2gb ddr3 1600 (@1333) generic RAM
2x120gb ssd
2x7200rpm sata drives
1xdvd+rw
Ati radeon hd5770 gpu
1xpci+e x1 usb 3.0 card requiring molex connector for power
I have done a lot of research leading me to best bet of 650w or better for psu that covers my system with spare and wont have to run the fan much. Limited budget but would prefer modular so i can reduce the amount of cabling needed inside the pc (sick of having spare cables bunched up all over the place).
System needs sata power for all drives and an extra sata for an aux connection on motherboard for pci-e x16 slot 2 (6 sata power total) and 3 molex (1 aux connector for pci-e x16 slot 1, 1 for usb 3.0 card and final one to power case fans).
I have looked at the tier list v.2 and it has helped a lot but it appear outdated as it doesnt list several psu's i have found.
Can anyone offer any good pointers?

Additional: reason for new psu needed is that my current one is slowly failing. Its an alpime 650w 3 yrs old and only started failing about 3 weeks ago

The guy on the first review I think may have has a bad unit or in all honesty his testing methods are debatable.

The old CX are mediocre quality , the new CX (450/550/650) are good.

I've seen reviews where the ripple & voltage regulation , ocp & uvp are absolutely on a par with £100+ gold units.

I've used half a dozen of these in builds now & own 2 myself running brand new £1000 ryzen rigs.

I have no qualms whatsoever recommending them at all, you will not find a high quality semi modular unit for under £60 anywhere else in the UK.

The one thing that a reviews agree on is a slightly noisy fan , I don't find this myself at all personally & suppose it depends what you compare it with.

You're running an old alpine ?? Those things are...

Out of curiosity, where are you perceiving 650W as required?

I would've said you don't need anything more than 400W for that kind of build? Load wattage with all of your specs, WLAN card, and 2 120mm fans would likely be around 310-330W

If i am honest, i used an online psu calculator which quoted 430 (or close to) minimum. Then added 20% to allow for max 80% usage. Then rounded up to go for quieter psu fan when in use. I dont want to be running psu close to its top end all the time and am running on a cheapo 650 now so figured lower to 600 for a decent branded psu.

Ps. Sorry, meant to edit first post to show 600w needed, not 650w

Do you have a budget?

Bare in mind that many online PSU calculators often calculate at top load. So you adding on another 20% is potentially caution on top of caution.

And NEVER go cheapo on a PSU. Never scrimp on a PSU, a bad quality PSU will come back to bite you if it fails!

600w will give you MORE than enough power for that rig with future upgrades.

Absolute top (preferably lower where possible) £65. I'd save up more but i doubt my current psu is going to survive much longer.

Ihttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CP-9020076-UK-Builder-CS550M-Semi-Modular I is semi-modular. Its efficiency rating is 80+ Gold. It will support your system with a 1080 added in. It is only a wee little tiny bit over budget.

So simply, anything within the 550w+ range of the entries from tier 1 (and maybe 2?) of the PSU tier list v2 that is elsewhere in the forum?

The difficulty I have on that one is that I am seeing a lot of mixed reviews on it. Some reviews give it good notes and info, others are more like this review:

https://www.hardwareinsights.com/corsair-cx550m-farewell-group-design/7/#Conclusion-and-evaluation

And there is even a message from someone on here saying to avoid the CX series:

I will be using the PC for some gaming occasionally but also for development work on website and applications.

You're running an old alpine ?? Those things are dire mate , the cxm is 10x the quality of what you're currently using.

I know the old alpine is dire but my ex partner didn't when she bought it 2-3 years ago for me (After seeing reviews on it and forum entries too - I am shocked it has gone on this long without frying something hahaha!)

What about the latest CS series - are they good or should I avoid?

I have just seen an Antec High current Gamer 620W Semi-modular PSU that is within my price range (seller has lowered price as it is open-box but unused) - should I go for it?

Seller? From? There are eBay sellers I wouldn't even think about using. As long as you can return it and are protected in some way I certainly would.

decided on Corsair CX series in the end. paid a little more than I wanted to as needed it urgently due to failure last night (system wouldn't post last night unless I pulled all but mobo and gpu connectors). Got the CX750M as they didn't have the 650 or 550 in stock where I went and I didn't have enough time to go looking here, there and everywhere. lol Thank you to all of you for your help and at least I know I have a fairly good PSU with a decent length warranty in the event it goes haywire.
Thanks again everyone

Good to hear you got your issue solved :D
