First of all, I copied most of this from a other tread from 2011, I copied most of his things because i need all the same info, but mostly his is outdated.
- Original post: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/315339-31-autocad-build-gaming-builds

Hi all,
I had a request from the father in law to help build an AutoCad computer. I have built a couple computers before but never an autocad. He is an architect and primarily uses Autocad 2017 in 3D mode.

couple Qs:

Q1) CPU - Should I use a CPU like a i7, or a CPU like the Intel Xeon E3-1275V5
Q2) GPU - I have seen references to cad specific GPUs (FireFL and Quadro).... do i need those and if so what model is appropriate (if not, is on board graphics or gamin gpu appropriate?)
Q3) RAM - how much? I was thinking for 16GB

I'm not planning to

Thanks

autocad is a cpu intensive program.

-so best would be a ryzen 1700. (more cores and threads than an i7)
- those are the weakest graphics cards u can find, why autocad isnt gpu intensive and u need an extra gpu to work on 2 monitors( u need a gpu if u get an ryzen because it doesnt have an intergrated gpu unlike an i7)
- 16 is good 32 is also good

hint, dont forget a ssd.

- from a mechatronic engineer

I've run AutoCAD on less (that's what happens when HR pays more for software than hardware  ), but while it's possible, I wouldn't recommend it. I would agree going with the R7 would be the most economical option. But if you're going i7, the X299 platform isn't exactly recommended at the moment but the i7-7800K is better than most options you could go with. I'd actually go for X99 and get a i7-6850K if you're going Intel.

So should i go with a Ryzen or a i7-6850K or I7-7800K?
And what GPU?

Around 1700 Euro's

i asked around and someone reccomended a I7-7700K because:

For existing Autocad releases they do not support multi-thread systems very well. However there is definitely great chance that such will be improved in future releases. So if you go for ryzen now for Autocad only, you will take a performance hit now but may benefit from the multi-thread capability in the future.
right now AutoCAD wont utilize more than 2 cores.
If you want the best experience the answer is guaranteed to be i7 7700k (over the Ryzen)

Yeah I agree I think I would go for an Intel rig but I think I would go for an X99 or even the X299 for this case. What country are you in?
